Here is an article on how crew height affects tank design.  In a nutshell, the author says that limiting maximum tank crew height is not all that important.  Good news for the Chieftain!

Yeah, but that 6'4" Staff Sergeant would certainly tell you that it sucks to be all folded-up and driving while buttoned-up in any M48/60 series tank  :sceptic:

I'm inclined to agree. I think this is an example of theory for some reason not entirely matching with reality. I can operate in all positions in the tank, but not comfortably for long. I'm also suspicious given the relative size of the turret on the M1 to the Type 88 which, by external appearance seems decidedly smaller despite sharing some of the design team.

Did I miss it, or in his analysis of minimum internal height due to requirement of the gun breech, does he assume that the TC and gunner are at the same seat height from the turret floor?

Meh, my gunner in Afgahnistan was 6'4" and he was fine in out Leo2A6(M) for up to 18 hours a day scanning his arcs. Same as a Leo C2.

Regards

I am 6'2", and I was a driver on M60A1 & A3, gunner as well. I also was a TC on M1A1. I never had a problem with fitting in a tank, regardless of position.

In my first duty station, we had a guy who was 6'6" as a driver on a M60A3. I asked him how he did it, he said he took off the driver's seat back, used his foot on the brake and his right hand on the accelerator.

From watching the chieftians youtube videos am I correct in assuming that a cold war soviet tanker had to be of short stature?
