Some vehicles, particularly the M37 seem like they could be easily converted into a light tank destroyer.

  • There is a large amount of space, meaning gun upgrades could be easy
  • Being based on the Chaffee, it's bound to be maneuverable
  • With the ease of such project it's actually hard to think it wasn't tried.

Converting the M37? Not really no. There was a proposal for 90mm GMC T78 however, a T24 hull with the M36 turret and gun

Here's the thread discussing that option...

Well eat3reat3r, if you are looking for an arty repurposed for dedicated TD use, Life_In_Black did find that the Israeli's Aberdeen mounted an RO L7 on an M40 GMC

Wait, what? The US did that at Aberdeen. Israel never operated the M40 GMC.

No problem, it happens. I'm glad I knew what you were referring to, as otherwise I'd be spending the next couple hours trying to use the forum's search function to try and figure out what was going on. As for artillery repurposed as a TD, I'm not aware of any examples other than the US mounting a 105mm L7 on an M40 GMC. Oh, and there was a German field conversion of a 7.5cm anti-tank gun mounted on a Grille or Wespe or something.

By 'RO' you mean Royal Ordinance, right? Because if so... Ive just discovered something I never knew I wanted...

Also... the T78 would be awesome to have in game....

Speaking of light tanks converted into tank destroyers, according to AP there was a version of the Panzer 38(t) with a superstructure-mounted 7.5 cm KwK L/24 instead of a turret, which seems like it would be an absolute blast to drive at Tier III or so if Wargaming decides they need a sixth vehicle built on the 38(t) chassis.

And plans for a VK 16.02 Leopard Waffentrager with the 10.5 cm howitzer... and a Leopard StuG with the 7.5 cm L/70...

*shakes himself back to reality* Anyways, those sound like fun.

There is a 'tank' called the M19, it was an AA tank based on an enlarged Chaffee chassis.

https://www.google.com/search?q=m19+tank&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=955&site=webhp&tbm=isch&imgil=A5njHEbBYU_GCM%253A%253BL7ugm3sGIo7XqM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.militaryfactory.com%25252Farmor%25252Fdetail.asp%25253Farmor_id%2525253D323&source=iu&pf=m&fir=A5njHEbBYU_GCM%253A%252CL7ugm3sGIo7XqM%252C_&usg=__5zFIgN03FOQj5X0w3FXPkY-AwBM%3D&ved=0CCkQyjdqFQoTCI_L9ovI9MYCFUhMiAodLtYCZg&ei=NJqyVY_hJsiYoQSurIuwBg#imgrc=A5njHEbBYU_GCM%3A&usg=__5zFIgN03FOQj5X0w3FXPkY-AwBM%3D

Technically an AA tank, but the twin 40mm Bofors could do some damage to enemies if this tank was tier 4 or 5.

There are three 90mm Brazilian Stuarts. The last model stretched the hull and added an extra set of bogies.

I thought the hellcat and chaffee had substantially the same chassis.
