A video we took of last year's event. This year it's on October 10/11.

Good thing this is done. People tend to forget history, and who ever forgets history is doomed to repeat it.

Sadly I'm away for the week it's happening, maybe next year I suppose. I went a few years back, it was a nice day, explosions, tanks... Seems like a solid day in my book.

I will be there most likely on sunday. They have a good place there. Nice museum and the show is great. A lot of equipment as well.

This looks like a very interesting event.  I'm glad to see things like this going on and am surprised the turnout is not higher.

I have to ask Mr Chieftain if the Mr. Moran you interviewed in that video is of any relation.  If that is the case I could understand how you got interested in armor.

Not an XOR condition, I'll have to put Rhinebeck in my plans too.

Think I'll go for one of the days.

It is a great day to see everything.  The tanks, planes, automobiles and other pieces of historical transportation is just amazing to see.  You can get up close and personal with some of the tanks before the re-enactments.  This year they are having a panel discussion with veterans between the battles (there are 2 each day).

Collings is trying to convert the place into a museum so it can be visited year round, but so far the town has been fighting it claiming it "isn't educational".

I plan to be there on Saturday.  If anyone else wants to meet up and say "Hello" just send me a message.

Please consider being generous with your donations... The museum is having difficulty with the local zoning board while trying to expand to host 80 tanks from the Littlefield Collection. Neighbors have been raising a stink about the traffic and the noise.

i realy like the collings. I get their magazine every year, and my mom took a ride on a B-25 that they had. Good people. In the video, the stug that they had, i know the guy. He lives in champaign, il. he runs a car repair shop. It(the stug)  was actually in "A band of brothers".

If you slide the  'play' slider to the 0:04 second mark of the video, you will see my 1944 WC51 just below the M20 Utility armored car.

The WC was pulling a 37mm AT gun that has been disconnected and is set up  out of the frame. The Chieftain participated in one of the battles on Saturday with a loaner weapon and  rode in the truck as crew. He terminated several Krauts with extreme prejudice  and a big grin ..:great:

...

At the 0:30 mark is an aerial view of the area with the open area to the right of the river under the Fieseler Fi 156 Storch's right wing being the Air Field. See this link for Google Map + satellite view of the area:

When Collings first bought the land, it was nothing but farmland and ' summer cottages ' around Lake Boon on a narrow one lane dirt  Barton Road.  Now the ' cottages' have been improved to big bucks, year round homes and suddenly people are complaining about the aircraft, noise and traffic from the Museum. A cease and desist order on the airfield ops was issued in May or June this year and Collings bought land for a new access road and bridge so Barton Road could be avoided, but the beautiful people are blocking it's construction. It looks to be a long court battle but I feel Collings will eventually prevail. The selectmen are cheap, old time Yankee stock and will try to avoid spending town money fighting this. Typical small town New England NIMBY mentality.

Selectmen in Stow doubt the 'educational' value of the foundation and events held there and suggest it's just a rich boy and his toys type of thing.

Sad situation with the Littlefield collection arriving ...

It is a great weekend event. I am lucky enough to work full time for The Collings Foundation, so I get to drive and play around with a lot of the vehicles on almost a daily basis. We have about 40 more vehicles that are still in CA waiting for the building of the new 65,000 sf museum building. The Stow planning board considers these events to be more entertainment than educational, so they turned down the building of the new facility even with the dedicated entry road that will bypass the neighborhood.

If anyone comes out for the event and can find Ken, introduce yourself as being from WoT. I am usually running around the entire weekend as I load all of the blanks for the vehicles, and usually end up playing gunner (out of sight) on one of them during the battles. We are working on a different layout this year as there will not be any flying from the field. It is too bad that we can not fly the Fi-156, but it allows us to do some different things with the field since we do not have to use it as an airfield throughout the day. It should move some of the pieces into positions that are much more visible for the crowd. We also plan on using our original Stug III in the battle this year (had a starter issue last year that has since been resolved), so there will be some new pieces for people to see. It will also allow people more access to the pieces as there will not have to be a "sterile" airfield except during the battle.

I believe the Stug you are referring to is the one that has been here in the past that belongs to a reenactment group out of NJ. It was made up for the movie on an existing tank chassis. The Stug that will be taking part this year is an original Stug that was part of the Littlefield Collection. It is one of the pieces that we have moved to MA from CA.

I hope to make it this year.

I have seen a truck or 2 laden with armor heading there over the past year or so, should be a good time!
