Looking at your stats I'd bave to say penetration.

Sorry, but 86 exp per battle is atrocious :P

well I haven't played over a thousand games either...  don't harass me for being new.  My first post and some A-hole decides to ridicule me.  thanks for being ever so helpful.

Does anyone else want to help me understand how it works, or tell me where to look?

This

Basically, if you can't penetrate a tank, you won't do damage (AP) or will do reduced damage (HE). Whether or not penetration is important depends entirely on what you're shooting at, what angle it is at towards you, and whether you're hitting his front or side/rear

Do a little searching on the forum and net for tank weak points-it does help to know where to aim for the best penetration chances. Some people go so far as to download skins that show you the weak spots on tanks but there's some controversy if this is cheating or not (imo no-they just make all the tanks in game look like clowns)

Depends on the gun. Some guns are specifically designed to shoots HE(152mm on KV), while some guns have very high velocities and are AP. Depends on your style. If you are a sniper, stick with the Armor piercing one. High damage ones should not be used as main guns, as they tend to do less damage. But there are exceptions(SU-152, etc).

AP shells can only do DAMAGE if they PENETRATE.

HE shells do not need to penetrate to do damage, but thicker armor is going to negate their damage.

Better penetration is never a bad thing. Don't let it go at the cost of all damage, though.

A simple approach is to look at the other tanks at your tier and a few above (tier 3 tank, compare tiers 3 - 5 for example).  Then look at your gun options.  You're looking for a gun that has enough penetration to crack most of the tanks you face, preferably with as much damage as you can get for that penetration value.

Notable exceptions are howitzer like the KV's 152mm gun and the Hetzer's 105mm.  They fire HE shells for low penetration but HUGE damage.  Then you want maximum damage, period.

On the other hand you have guns like the T-34's 57mm gun.  It has similar penetration to the best 76mm gun, but a good bit less damage.  Yet it's often called the T-34's best gun?

It may do 30 less damage, but it's more accurate and fires more than twice as fast.  So while it does 85 damage to the 76's 115 damage, it has slightly better penetration (better chance to hurt heavy targets), and it fires off a round every 2 seconds while the 76 takes 4 seconds, doing 170 damage in the same time it takes the 76 to do a mere 115 damage. Much better deal.

So there's a lot that goes into gun selection, but for basic purposes, go for penetration first.
