Hi Chieftain,

I am not personally knowledgeable about Challenger colours but there has been discussion on the missing_lynx forum which might be of help:

I'm curious where the second two T54E1 photos were taken. It's not where I saw the tank in Aberdeen, neither is it where I saw it the two times at Anniston. And it doesn't -look- like Sand Hill.

The lower half of the turret needs to be rebuilt, resculpte, reshapened .

Could have been worse. Did you see the original version of the turret top, when the kit was announced? They copied straight from the original WoT model before I started my 'change' crusade.

This thread screams at me to ask when WG is gonna package prem tanks sold with a model of the tank as a bundle? Like you buy your in game tank, and get a model mailed to you as well.. I'd spring the extra bit and it would get me back into modeling probably.

They already did the reverse - models sold bundled with a code for a tank.  Though by now many of those kits are old enough that - from what I've read - the codes are expired, or you may have to talk to Support to get them to work.

They need to resurrect that. Why did they stop with it?

If it works like that I'll blow everything on good codes and good models

Hmmm.    I think I can take a good guess.  Imagine you're a customer in a hobby shop and you want to build a Panther tank.  You can buy the Italeri WOT kit which has some bonus codes for the WOT game, or a kit from another manufacturer without those codes.  The WOT codes are only useful to you if you play WOT, though, and most plastic modelers probably don't play WOT, so they won't pay extra for those codes.  So Italeri has to price its kit about the same as the other companies, or few people will buy it.  So they're basically giving away the WOT stuff for free.   Which is OK with them, because WG probably gave them those codes free.

Why? As a marketing promotion.  It was a way for WG to entice plastic modelers to try WOT.  WG was willing to give away the premium tanks as an advertising expense.   By now, they figure they've won all the new customers that the plastic modeling industry has to offer, so there's no point giving away more free stuff there.

The tracks are also off. It's awaiting some painting / detailing / weathering, I've just been too lazy so far to actually get to it.

Does anyone know if this company {"ZVEZDA"} still exists..? And if so, are they still making models..?

I remember seeing some boxes on store shelves waaaay back, but I haven't seen anything like this in a long time, and I can't seem to find any carriers/distributors in my area...

Zvezda is still in operation and growing year by year...its a modelling company from Russia, quality pretty good. You can find their catalogue at http://www.zvezda.org.ru/en/. You can find good prices on their kits on ebay from sellers from former USSR.

Thanks for the tips, Dude...

I will check that out. I haven't done a model in decades, but doing models again might help improve my hand dexterity/neuropathy etc. And the way I play pixel tanks, I need all the help I can get!

~Cheers!

Remember my Sherman?

Replacement barrel and mantlet ordered and received. It came along with a Thompson, an M1919, two backpacks and a spare mantlet:

Tank disassembled, turret lifted, old barrel and mantlet removed, front face of trunnion plate made flat in the middle:

Base of replacement barrel turned down to 8.3mm from 9.6 so it fits in the hole in the trunnion plate:

New barrel friction fitted:

Mantlet and muzzle device fitted:

To be continued ....

So I found a mod for World of Tanks that visually replaces my Fury with Oddball's M4A3E4. The accuracy of this mod is not quite 100%, but good enough to base my build on.

Image

The next thing on my to do list was fabricate and apply front fenders and rear mudflaps. To this end I had to prepare my upper hull.

Unfortunately mine has a small casting error in the rear quarter:

Image

But that's easily fixed with some milliput fine. Just need to get my hands on some.

To prepare the hull I partially cut away the HL's front fenders, leaving enough 'meat' to superglue the new fenders on, also sanded the top of the 'meat' to assure a better bond:

Image

I took two pieces of remnant resin sprue and cut them to shape, then superglued them to the inside of the very rear of the upper hull, to have more 'meat' to superglue the mudflaps on to:

Image

The fenders mounted:

And mudflaps:

Image

I know I said I'd leave the internals standard HL, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't do any work on them. No longer being able to use the BB function because of the thinner barrel I decided to cut away the majority of the BB unit, leaving just enough structure for the elevation mechanism. I also filled up the forward end of what remains of the BB unit's structure with coarse milliput for a better fit of the barrel when I put the whole thing back together again.

Image

This also left enough space in the hull to move the electronics block on top of the battery housing, instead of tucked away to the side of it.

Image

This makes maintenance a lot more efficient since now I can reach every cable without needing to remove the electronics block from its snug hiding place wedged between the battery compartment and hull side wall.

I've also removed the smoker, I do this with all my HL tanks. I strongly dislike the HL smoker, way too noisy, not proportional. This gave me enough space to fit a better speaker, too. So the sound is a lot better now.

This is going to be a shoe-string budget build, so no recoil unit or flash, no proportional silent smoker, just basic HL electronics, etc.

Lert,

 Spoiler

That looks pretty neat.

The barrel looks like it was actually made out of steel..? Or, aluminum, maybe..? Will you have any problems with the increased weight/balance..? *ie. Will the gun barrel stay up and in a fixed position..?  Hope so. Show us the pics upon completion.

Aluminium, same as the original barrel. It's very light, the elevation mechanism has no trouble keeping it at any elevation. I'm using a $150 RC tank from Heng Long as a base. While HL tanks are toys rather than models (IE, concessions have been made for playability / cost / durability at the expense of scale acccuracy / crispness of detail) HL is pretty high end for a 'mere toy' and are rather sturdy bases to work from. They like to make their mechanics beefy and reliable.

well, I probably won't be around this place for much longer anyway, or to see the final results of your build. so, good luck with your model.

Is this thread dead? Am I the only one still posting in here?

Anyways, did some more work .. Looking at the WoT remodel and movie stills, many of the tools on my model Sherman aren't fitted to the movie tank, and the gun travel lock is mounted on the rear engine deck instead of glacis plate. Also, while it has the 'Sherman shelf' hanging off the back engine deck in the movie, it doesn't have the spare track link holders that came with my model. Plus, there's that whole ugly casting error on the right rear quarter.

So I spent some time removing tools, cutting off fittings and puttying up the holes.

(Sorry for blurry quality)

And rear deck.

Basic cheap-aft primer from a rattle can from the local discount shop.

Base coat applied, some decals applied, tools and 'Sherman shelf' re-fitted.

And rear view.

Still to do:

- Paint running gear

- Weather tracks

- Detail the tank

- Figure out how I'm going to do the rest of the decals

- Dry brush and highlight edges

- Washes

- Pigments

- Source or scratchbuild a ton of stowage

Still so much work left ...

Sorry, I've been distracted by other things so I haven't been modelling lately... hope to have something to show soon.  It helps that the weather is warmer so I can open my window and point the fan that way... just modelling in an apartment with no dedicated modelling space.
