Are they real life friends, or "friends" you made in a tank game?  Funny how many of them only happen to become friends with other good players.

People make friends with other people who have like interests and ability.  It's how it works.  Of course good players mostly make in game friends with other good players.

I have played and still play a lot of sports, and have many friends about my skill level.  I don't have any professional ball players as friends mostly because I'm not in those circles based on my skill.

Of course there are always exceptions, but overall there is nothing sinister or weird about good players hanging out with good players.

There's little difference between friends made online and real life friends.  In fact the term "real life" is basically nonsensical.

except insofar as that higher individual skill is likely correlated with having better toonmates in the first place.

What we are comparing are a group of parameters that all correlate. Win rate solo, win rate platoon, WN8 for each, and choice of platoon mates are all likely to depend principally on one factor: the skill of the player in question. I wouldn't try to split the hairs too finely.
