Here is a question.  One that I didn't even know was a question until I stumbled over a Wikipedia article (yeah, I realized the source).

Could the "88" the Allies thought was going to be fitted to the Chi Ri been a Type 88 AA gun and not an 88mm Type 99 gun?

Unlikely, because apparently the US Army researchers specifically mentioned "German influence" and "equivalent of Tiger" in their reports.

Yeah, but didn't they misidentify the Type 88 earlier as a "German design" or related to the German 88?

The Type 88 AA is a 75mm cannon. A big part of the "it was meant for an 88mm" idea was the big turret. The Type 88 AA 75mm doesn't fit with "big turret must mean big weapon" idea.

the Chi-Ri Kai would have mounted an 88 had the war actually continued past 1945

I also heard that if the war went on to 1946 Hitler would have had nuclear tanks and Stalin would be firing bears out of orbital sputniks!!!!111 :O

The Chi-Ri Kai was a proposed idea created within this thread as a tier 8 candidate. No such project actually existed. Past 1945, plans were for production versions of the Chi-To, Chi-Nu's with the long 75mm, and the Chi-Ri II which was really a combination of the Chi-Ri and Chi-To with emphasis on ease of production and as a design originally meant as a 30 ton class tank. The Chi-To's origins were 20 and 25 ton designs which got heavier due to late war requirements.

Buff My Tank: Chi-To

The article is the article, but more importantly we had someone from Japan point us towards new info on Chi-Ho. Let's see what comes out of it.

It's not a doujinshi. It's a full book with an abbreviated ebook version sold on Toranoana.
