The 'Outrageous' 40-Year-Old Film That Predicted the Future

Released in November 40 years ago, the poster warned audiences to prepare themselves “for a perfectly outrageous motion picture.”

But is it really “perfectly outrageous”?

Even its wildest flights of fancy no longer seem outrageous at all. The film was so accurate in its predictions that its most far-fetched satirical conceits have become so familiar as to be almost quaint.

I'd have to admit the Shawshank Redemption was a heck of a movie - I watch it whenever I stumble upon it on TV.

The Greatest ever movie? Kinda a tough one since there are so many great ones.

However, Lawrence of Arabia with Peter O'Toole has real cinematic scope.

To Kill a Mockingbird      Based on arguably the greatest American novel of the 20th Century, my 7th grade teacher took me to see it when it came to the downtown theater.  She wanted me to know how wrong racism is and that standing up against it, particularly in the South, is a courageous act.

Doctor Zhivago

Lawrence of Arabia

Gone With the Wind

Ben Hur

Kids... if you haven't watched these movies, you don't know what really great moviemaking is about.

A while back I tried watching Avengers Age of Ultron but I shut it off after a few minutes. Too much CGI made it too cartoonish for me to enjoy.

Here are examples of what used to make movies so special and spectacular. No CGI here. For the most part, it was all real.

I have not seen the last few new James Bond films so I don't if they've gone all CGI or not. What made the Bond films so special was the stunts like this one.

And these.

The ridiculous slide-whistle sound-effect kind of ruined the moment in the movie.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.     Blondie , Angel Eyes and Tuco ...'nuff said ?

Sink The Bismarck  -- special effects still hold up well.  Something about the speeches by Admiral Lutjens that makes one want to go out and join the German Navy.

And in World of Warships you can be that guy on the Bismarck that yells  "FIRE!"

All Quiet on the Western Front -  both versions are worthwhile 1930 and 1979

Animal House-      see if you can guess what I am now  [puts some mashed potatoes in mouth]

Dr Strangelove and Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers

Mine is Interstellar,

Because, well, everything!

Interstellar is also one of mine.

I'm a huge movie watcher, and I rate everything I watch on IMDb.  Below are the only movies I've given a 10 to.  It's based on my enjoyment rather than any other factors.

  • Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
  • Interstellar
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy
  • Avatar
  • Man of Steel
  • Kill Bill 1 & 2

I like to think my movie watching is a lot more interesting and diverse than that list, but there it is all the same :)

I've actually given a lot more a 10, but I sometimes drop their scores down after a re-watch.

Alien.

Aliens.

Anything after Aliens (Alien 2) is trash because Sigourney Weaver bought the rights from Ridley Scott and trashed the timeline.

Prometheus.

Upcoming Prometheus Sequel.

Saving Private Ryan.

Bridge over the river Kwai.

Cool Hand Luke.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

High Plains Drifter.

Ex Machina

West World (and of course the new HBO series based on this).

To Kill a Mockingbird.

Many others.

Or they're licensed engineers like myself, who know too much to believe in ridiculous conspiracy theories created by people who don't understand physics concepts as simple as kinetic energy.

I love the way you have previously admitted that you don't believe in science, but you still think you are somehow qualified to render judgements on scientific issues.

My favorite part that the tinfoils always over look in regards to this. Very large natural gas lines ran up through the towers, and were sheared off and ignited, contributing to the heat, and type of fuel feeding the conflagration . . . which also ties into the tinfoil myth about the turbine blades on the engines self immolating, or not being in an environment capable of producing this unless C4 was used.

Yeah, my bad. I liked the Predator series also, but it got milked and diverted. In the original one you actually see a Xenophobe skull that was collected. There was supposed to be an entire series around encounters between Predators, Engineers and Xenophobes. I sure hope, now that Ridley owns the rights again, that all this gets reconciled and put back on track. So much potential material and awesome kick [edited]Sci-Fi.

Seriously how is Pacific Rim not on here somewhere? The whole premise is about giant robots knocking the everloving $#!% out of giant monsters should be a standout. I have low standards I guess lol.

A part of my " A-LIST" In addition to all the star wars/star trek/alien stuff that is fairly common.

A list of some other movies that may have not came to the noggin right away:

The Hunt for Red October

Some of the stuff w/ Steven Segaul is always good. or Clint Eastwood.

Rocky 1-4. kinda got old after that. literally.

The FIRST Michael Bay Transformers movie. All the rest lost their "ooh shiney!" appeal.

The Drunken Master w/ Jackie Chan.

Fury, a Bridge too far, the longest day, and a bunch of others.

The classics listed are always good. and GUP? what is that? I'm new to the whole anime thing so I'm suffering from a bit of "live under rock" syndrome in regard to alot of that stuff. Some plot ideas from what I have heard are brilliant though. Buddy of mine explained the basic concept of the FATE series and the amount of plot in there is just nuts.

Trivia Question

In the 1960 movie Psycho there is a scene in which something is shown which had never before been seen in a movie.

What was it?

Something to do with a toilet, either the first time one was shown or the first time it was used.
