New to the game, I have been in several battles so far. I have noticed that a) my crew experience does not go up and b)no gold is earned during game play. Is the only way to get gold for the up-grading of vehicles or the purchase of better vehicles, to actually purchase it with real money?

You earn silver, not gold. Silver can be used to upgrade your vehicle. Also you earn experience which is used to unlock various equipment and vehicles. Gold can speed up the process by giving you premium accounts which increase your gains after battles. It also lets you purchase additional garage slots and premium tanks. You can also spend gold to convert vehicle xp after they have been elited to free xp.

You can play the game, advance to higher tiers, get 100% highly trained crew, and do all of this without spending any amount of real money.

The biggest advantage that gold gives you is you can advance faster if you choose to spend real money on a premium account.   So it's "easier" if you choose to spend real money, but there are plenty of people here who don't spend gold on their accounts and they have just as much fun as someone who does spend.

Your crew experience won't jump up all that quickly, especially at first.

It takes a decent bit of XP to get those skills moving, especially since your crew only earn a percentage of your actual XP (until you have the tank elited and choose the accelerated training option).  As of now, you've only racked up 500xp or so, which is not bad for a total newcomer with only a few games under their belt.  By the time you start unlocking the tier 2 tanks and getting your starters upgraded, they'll start to improve.

Really, you shouldn't worry about your crew skills just yet - unless you specifically plan on staying in the early tanks for a good while, the first 2 or 3 tiers will flash by so quickly that your crews won't improve much before you train them for the next tank.  Once you hit tiers 4 and 5, you'll be spending much more time in each tank, so your crews will be able to properly train up.  Also, by that point, you'll be able to afford the 75% training for them, which makes a big difference.

By way of an example, to go from the Leichte Traktor (tier 1) to the Pz38NA (tier 4) takes around 7000xp if you blast right through, 13,000xp if you get everything.  Getting everything on just the Pz38NA costs 8400xp, and doing the same on the tier 5 PzIV will take nearly 32,000xp!

So you'll be spending anywhere from 3 to 5 times as long on just the PzIV as you did on the first 3 tanks combined.  On the plus side, your credit and XP earnings will go up with every new tank, so that 32,000xp isn't quite as imposing as it must seem based off of the tier 1 tanks!

As for gold, there are a few ways to get it for free, but yes - the main way is to buy it.  They occasionally hold contests on the WoT website where the winners get gold as a prize, and once you're far enough along I've heard that there are gold rewards for success in Clan Wars too.  Never actually had much success on that front yet, so I can't attest to that one myself.

I know what you mean OP. When I first played this game I was confused between the two currencies and I actually thought that you could buy 250 Gold for $1 under the Get Premium or Get Gold thing. It also didn't help that they added a Gold to Silver conversion which only works from Gold to Silver. I though it worked both ways.

Gold is a currency used to get "Premium Content" in the game such as premium ammo or shells which have more penetration than regular AP or HE shells. Gold can also be used to buy Premium, which basically gives your account 50% more silver earnings and experience earnings per game. Here I have made this a while ago so I hope it can help you understanding of Gold or manage your use of Gold in the game.

USD to Gold Currency Conversion Based on different Gold Packs:
1250 Gold for $6.95 ~ 179.9G=$1
3000 Gold for $14.95 ~ 200.1G=$1

12000 Gold for $49.95 ~ 240.24G=$1
25000 Gold for $99.95 ~ 250.13G=$1
