I am interested in knowing what about the turrent of the proposed panzer 4 s failed. More specifically how far did the trials go before the german army had to call it off?

What's a turrent?

The turret was too heavy.

IIRC, suspension was at its last points. Couldn't bear any more weight.

Also, turrent....I'm sorry, but its funny.

I suspect it may have something to do also with stress from the extra weight on the turret ring.

*turret

The Pz IV S couldn't be built due to the suspension not being able to handle the extra weight as well as needing a larger turret ring.

Was the Schmallturm any good to begin with anyway? It looks awfully unpractical, with the smaller crew space and apparent lack of a co-ax machinegun.

Surprisingly, yes. It had a better layout for the crew so they had more room, plus it was lighter than the regular Panther turret by a hundred kg or so. It also had an MG42 coax

They didn't even make it to getting any (armor grade) Schmalturms mounted on Panthers, let alone spare any for spurious projects like getting one on a Panzer IV
