So I'm finally getting around to the Czech line with the On Track event.  I'm not sure why, but I was expecting this thing to be pretty decent.  Maybe it's just me, but this seems like the worst tier 8 medium in the game.  So far, I can't think of a single one I'd prefer less than this...including any premium, which are supposedly worse than non-premiums.

On paper, it looks like the 88 gun with the stock turret is better than the 105 with the upgraded turret:

  • higher dpm
  • better penetration
  • more gun depression
  • better gun handling (the hidden stats on the 88 must be horrible though)
  • better power to weight ratio

Is the higher alpha worth it to go to the 105?

Honestly, the only pro I can thing of is that at least it didn't power-creep anything else.  Am I way off base?  Did anyone learn to love this thing after a while, or is this just going to be a painful grind?

Your not missing anything, the 8.8cm and stock turret make the tank very serviceable.  Basically a panther II BUT its not the unique flavor of the tank, its one of a few non soviet clones that has high alpha on a single shot [though it comes at the cost of battlefield flexibility].   While grinding I used the 8.8cm and latter marked the tank with the 10.5cm.

I did learn to like the tank, for me though the tank in its final config is pretty much the same thing tier for tier as the T-40 is at tier 6 and saw no reason to keep the tier 8.  Seriously the T-40 is pretty much the same tank just scaled down here and there.

So i currently have the TVP T50/51 in my garage, and let me tell you something. I had a hard time with the TVP VTU. If you mount the 8.8, you get an AMX CDC with higher DPM and less pen on the chassis and with the turret of a tier 6 prem. The other is an M4A1 ravioli with a worse accuracy, higher RoF and lower DPM. Its all a matter of play style, but I honestly couldnt wait to get all the needed free xp to get out of the TVP VTU. I had more fun in a stock Skoda T50 than a fully upgraded TVP VTU, and I used both guns. AgingJedi did a decent review on it and points out the good and bad times to use either gun.

Hope this helps!

TVP VTU have one good thing about it - it leads to Skoda.

Try the 105? I followed the advice and ran 88 to save XP and absolutely hated this tank. At a minimum it needs a view range buff to 400m. VTU was really not fun to play in any single way.

Thanks, I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I just put the 105 on and had a decent game on Prokohrovka:

Just missed out on a RW at the end.

It's not a keeper tank by any means.

Grind it as efficiently and as quickly as you can. (run reserves and whatever else you can)

I used the 8.8 cm simply because I like the higher pen, dpm, gun handling, accuracy, aim time, and gun depression over the 320 alpha gun.

The top gun gets worse at everything except the ability to trade shots around corners more effectively (but less pen, and again it's a med not a heavy)

You get through it fairly quickly provided you are a half-decent player.

I finished the Skoda T50 grind without reserves faster than I finished the VTU with reserves.

About to buy the TVP t50/51 while it's on the 2 million credit discount :)

pretty lame WG is only giving out tier 3 tanks for on tracks now.   Greedy, disgusting devs.  As if it wasn't bad enough we have to put up with thier greed trumping gameplay

As mentioned in all of the above posts: Your analysis is correct!

I run the long 88 with the stock turret:

More depression (-8) and a little more turret armor (because of the angles)

I found that I was much happier with the more workable 8 gun depression, at the cost of some DPM, HP, and VR.

Also, honestly if you shoot nothing but pure gold, the short 88 gun with the stock turret gets a whopping 12 degrees of gun depression and also has the highest DPM of all gun choices. Of course it is only 200 pen HEAT, which is so bad for a tier 8.

save the XP.  Go with the stock turret and 88, don't upgrade anything else that isn't needed, and go straight for the tier 9.

So far, I've had better luck with the 105.  I guess the higher alpha fits my play style more.

I was trying to use the 88 like a Panther II, but it wasn't working nearly as well.  Just too many misses on fully aimed shots at long range, and the higher ROF at medium to short distances just meant more exposure.

There are definitely times where I wish I had the 88 to get a 2nd shot off or to use the extra gun depression, but I'll probably stick with the 105.  Maybe I'll run a comparison between the two - say 50 games each - and hopefully by the end I'll be close to being done with the dang thing.

use personal reserves, and save up free xp.

I skipped to the tier 6.  put a crew in it, which I perked up in strong holds.  a while back, when tier 9s were on discount, I burned that saved up free xp, and acquired the tier 9, and promoted my then just shy of 3 perk crew to the tier 9.

I played several hundred battles in the tier 9, waiting for an on-track, and/or another high tier discount, which just so as happened started yesterday and purchased the tier 10.

I have 10 battles in the tier 10, the last of which earned me MT15.4 with honors - it's a fantastic tank.

I have no regrets skipping the tiers 1-5, or 7 and 8, and thus also saving the credits on the tanks, modules, as well as the gold training, and retraining the crews for each stop along the way.

I did not always do the above, but I play the game for fun these days, and spending time/credits/gold in tiers, and/or tanks I don't enjoy is not fun for me anymore.

Nice...congrats on the MT15.4.

Unfortunately, I spent a lot of free XP on unlocking everything for this tank.  I would have been much better off having used that XP on skipping this tank.  I've never skipped a tier 8 before, but if I could go back, I'd skip this one.

it sucked, I didn't care for it, I tried the various combos of turrets and guns, but like you, the 105 worked better for me in the long run...its just so tall as well...I unlocked the tier 9 about a month ago, but I hated the tier 8 so much, I burned about 12k free XP just to get out of it and unlock the tier 9...I ground the heck out of it, as others said, running personal reserves, it speeds things up a little

If you were expecting it to be decent, then you haven't been paying attention to the reviews.  It's workable but pretty bad.  It's worth the grind as the two tanks following it are excellent.

Started playing the tank, didn't like it at first, then I Free XP thru it.   Do not recommend you spend a lot of time or XP grinding that tank.

Move on, you will will be happy you did.   Glorious tanks await you when you do decide to move on

I've had the TVP so far for 2 days and the tank is working just fine for me though I really hate comments from the peanut gallery when I go to snipe with it whenever I'm bottom tier.

You can get a free tier 5 tank every month through tankrewards.com.  If you're playing enough to get an On Track done, I'm sure you will also get a tier 5 there, plus other stuff.
