President of the NRA hires "Good Guys with Guns" to protect her house from the violent left-wing liberals who are angry about mass shootings.  Perhaps she should just buy a gun to protect herself instead of relying on "good guys" for hire.  After all, when it comes down to the wire, the only one you can trust is yourself.  What if that "good guy" for hire is really a violent leftist with a radical anti-gun ideology and an AR-15 to back it up?

Eh, at least it's not coming out of the public purse... unlike the laundry list of pro-gun-control politicians who get armed security paid for by the same citizens they want to disarm.

In my opinion, our Politicians and NRA CEOs should have exactly the same amount of protection against mass shootings as the rest of us do.  None.  If they don't want to get splattered, maybe they can buy a gun to protect themselves.

Got the lower hull and roadwheels of my Chieftain Mk.5 mostly done - slapped two coats of delightful olive green on the lower hull and managed not to totally ruin the roadwheels by painting them rubber black.

 

Graduated to the start of the upper hull.  This is very therapeutic.  I spend less time on twitter and less time raging at people in PVE games.  Helps that I just finished a playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us.  Those are pretty hard to beat when it comes to video games.  The world can go to blazes while I immerse myself in plastic sprues, the smell of model glue and Tamiya paint.

I read this to get some understanding of concepts such as "horizontal gene transfer" and what these suggest for our understanding of evolution in general; pretty good stuff overall though the author can be a little too cute for their own good. It also works as a biography of a man named Carl Woese, a bio-physicist who spent a long time at the cutting edge of the field.

If there had been a good guy with a gun there, that never would've happened.  The good guy with a gun would have pulled out his gun, let everyone know he's a good guy with a gun and that he was going to handle the situation, and everyone would have calmed down.

Or, taking a slightly less "let the world burn, it would be funny" / "sarcasm and disdain as a political philosophy" approach, maybe if more people were in a position to not mistake a backfire for a gunshot (they really don't sound that much alike)...

 

Half the reason I don't think guns are a big deal is that I grew up around them, I knew about gun safety and what a guns looks and sounds like before I could ride a bike.  Our cultural angst -- both the irrational revulsion and the irrational adoration -- over guns is as much a matter of mythology and ignorance over the nature of the objects, as it is anything else.

Most people just aren't interested in guns on a personal day to day level, hard to get people to learn about something they aren't particularly interested in owning or participating in.  Guns either don't effect their lives at all, only effect them tangentially through movies, or negatively through crime.

Problem with the large damage caused is 'when and where' it is caused. Those French autoloading lights are particularly useful in the late game.  I don't know the specific game to which you refer, but it is  not impossible that by the time I finally was able to take advantage of the tank, it was too late to make much of a difference.

And yet I think making them into just objects, just tools that can be dangerous if misused but not magical or special, instead of fetishistic icons of power or death, would help all around.  Too many people have no grounding, no realistic experience to temper their thinking, when it comes to firearms, and that applies both to their misuse and to the fear of them.

 

Or maybe it's just my older rural roots showing, and the country is changing in a way that leaves me behind and makes my experiences irrelevant.

 

And this reminds me of something else that bugs me... maybe it's just one of my insane quirks, but I don't take people's opinions about something seriously when they refuse to educate themselves about that thing.  Too many people in the anti-gun movement are not just blatantly ignorant on the subject of their ire, they're proudly and aggressively ignorant on the subject, as if learning about firearms would somehow taint the moral purity they believe they have on the subject.  I have a near infnity of examples of people who are adamant about which kinds of firearms should be banned or restricted, and yet they don't even know what they terms they're using mean -- they think semi-automatics work like "fully auto", they think military-looking firearms are more dangerous than otherwise identical "hunting rifles", etc.

(Of course, to me, the obsession with deaths that involve firearms has always struck me as more media frenzy than anything... homicide involving a firearm accounted for less than 1% of all deaths in the US in 2015.  Then again, we now have backup cameras in our cars mandated by law because less than 100 people a year died in backup accidents, so people can fixate on anything... I wonder how many people will die a year because drivers get distracted by the video monitor in the center of their dashboard...)
