He seems to me like the classic politician from a political family.

Yeah... levels of privilege on top of privilege. Just yuck.

NOT to detract from that criticism (because Trudeau is not my man), someone recently leaked stuff about a Conservative dirty tricks (?) program against the far right People's Party of Canada to try to stop the PPC from eating some of their votes. And they also have been coming out with some claims e.g. "the Liberals will raise the GST!" that as far as I know are just... made up.

Unfortunately Trudeau is the result of the "anyone-but-Harper" mentality in the previous election. Contrary to what conservatives might say, Trudeau didn't really fool anyone into voting for him (aside from maybe environmentalists who didn't expect him to buy the pipeline). Almost 63% of voters wanted something that was further left-leaning than what the Conservative party offered, and now that "something" turned out to be less-than-ideal.

Nonetheless, we rejected Harper's government, but based on the Conservative party's antics, they haven't really seemed to come to terms with that. Based on their support in polls, they haven the done anything to broaden their appeal to non-conservatives. Scheer was talking about pipelines in Quebec just before the weekend, when the majority of Quebecers don't care about a pipeline or are outright against the idea. The man is either completely tone deaf, locked in his own echo chamber, or enjoys talking down at us as much as Harper did.

I have considered it. When I got my flight physical before I started my flight training, I deliberately picked the  First Class medical certificate, which is a requirement for Airline Transport Pilot certification in order to ensure that I was capable of getting such a license if I felt I should go in that direction.

However, it  was always an emergency backup option. Base pay for entry level pilots is far below what would sustain my family's current standard of living, especially considering the hours.

Hell, your twin engine qualified too which is pretty grand, aren't you ?  Are you instrument rated also ?

Oh no, I would say the contrary in a certain sense - Harper kept a tight lid on things and you can't say that he let the social conservatives have their way.  I don't think that would be the same to the same degree with Scheer.

However, we have a distressing habit of continually flip-flopping between the two parties, and there are 4 parties vying for more left-wing policies (Liberals, NDP, Bloc, and Greens) so it's possible that Scheer will win.

I'm worried that the US is going to end up flip-flopping between extremes, each one winning in turn after the other fails miserably to do anything useful by putting its wackadoodle ideological purity over anything practical.

Depends if you consider law and order shenanigans to be social? I'm thinking primarily about the laws about minimum sentences and expats bring unable to vote, both of which looked pretty unconstitutional on the first read-through, even to a lay person. To me, the fact he pushed those through when his party was full of lawyers that could/would have told him it wouldn't fly just seems like a waste of the court's time and resources. The fact that 5 of those judges were his appointees shows it wasn't activist judges out to ruin his day, but a legitimate over reach.

That aside, he definitely ran a tight ship, and I agree Scheer doesn't seem up to the task. I'm not sure if it's just the prairie conservatives high jacking the party, or Scheer just waiting until he's more secure  before he starts cracking the whip.

A Conservative-led minority might be the best option at this point. A Liberal-NDP coalition would just drag it too far to the left, Trudeau could have easily left the Transmountain pipeline to rot, since it's not like Albertans would vote for him anyways, and I doubt a leftist coalition would have done the same. At the same time, a minority would keep Scheer from going off the deep end, assuming we can avoid partisan deadlock.

Nope, SEL only. Only got part way through IFR before my local flight school shut down. It was the only one in the Bay Area which was VA certified to use the GI bill. Then, I bought a house and had to start paying a mortgage. That put an end to my flying for the last five years.

Well that means you have just a few more thing to shoot for is all. Your a very smart person so I see no problem for you too get those two things what so ever even if you don't decide to become an airline pilot.  They would still be a nice accomplishment indeed.

On another note..When to we get to see a book from you on the beginnings of the US army air service?  That is a fascinating topic indeed.

I cannot agree that a Liberal-NDP coalition will or would go too far to the left. Obviously it all depends on where you sit :)

Some interesting speculation on another forum about whether Singh or Scheer will get replaced.

NPR's early analysis this morning was that:

* Trump served as a bit of a "populism vaccine" for a lot of centrist voters.

* Scheer's near-total dismissal of climate change as even a topic of concern turned off a lot of centrist voters.

E:  speaking of Trump, more polls are showing 50% or greater support for impeachment and removal.   Also, when the women on the recent spacewalk corrected Trump on it not being the first time a woman had been on a spacewalk, just the first time for an all-women spacewalk... he evidently tried to give them the stealth-bird with a middle-finger forehead scratch.

Glyphosate and bad "science".

https://slate.com/technology/2019/10/glyphosate-does-not-cause-cancer-saves-native-plants.html

As much as I hate almost everything Monsanto does, and would love to see them take it "the hard way" over something this big... the glyphosate/cancer connection is probably just a lie... and the sort of lie that unfairly taints real science by UN agencies by association.

Interesting that the Quebec separatist party picked up so many seats as well.

I think of this similarly to GMOs, very reactionary.  The part people are REALLY reacting to, Monsanto/Bayer, is very real but that ire needs to get redirected back to them somehow.

Call me still cautiously optimistic, I think the trailer is vague on purpose.  It's JJ doing his mystery box thing, for good or ill.

I freaking hate the "vague trailer" idea.  It doesn't make me want to go see the movie, it makes me want to beat the person who made the trailer with a baseball bat.  I mean, even a trailer about a murder mystery is less mysterious than this trailer.  At least with the murder mystery trailer you know what the movie is about.  This trailer?  Just some vague bullcrap spread over a series of movie shots.
