Most of the U.S. Army personnel records were destroyed in a fire in 1972.

Holy sh$t :(  I had no idea.

Despite the fact that there weren't any tanks nearby, I honored the spirit of the sign and didn't climb on the Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle.

Yet another M551 with tracks worn down. The few private collectors who own/run them have raided pretty much every 551 monument and gate guard for their tracks by now, replacing them with worn-out ones.

I'm guessing the rubber isn't supposed to be flush with the metal?

I love how WOT makes the Sheridan into something wonderful when in real life it was a complete failure ! :D

As far as floaty boats goes I have recently acquired HMS Monarch. I honestly don't see were all the talk about it being a bad boat comes from. As long as you play it according to the style of the UK BB line it seems like a pretty solid boat to me.

The epitome of civilization has just been reached.  We might as not not bother trying anymore, because it's all downhill from here.

Welp, I was going to update WOT and get the free Hellcat just in case they ever add PVE... but evidently WOT now requires that you install Wargaming's bloated bug-infested useless spyware (WGC).

Last I checked:

  • defaults to run-at-startup and always-on
  • takes up unnecessary drive space
  • does absolutely nothing of need that couldn't be accomplished with a direct download link
  • can't be forced to disable torrents, including the seeding, forcing you to act as their update server
  • reports an invasive level of information back to Wargaming
  • massively buggy and broken
  • etc

It's just Steam or Origin or Epic, but for a very small number of games.

Thanks for the heads-up. Wasn't planning to re-enter, but good to know none the less. Especially hate the torrenting nonsense.

And done by the bloody Commies, too. They beat us to the space victory, and now they've taken the cultural victory?! Hax, I say! Where's Gandhi and Montezuma with their gadgets and dismal diplomacy when you need them?

She was on my team and basically suiscouted an early exit from the game.

Last week in books:

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0691183511/ref=nosim/librarythin06-20

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0316187291/ref=nosim/librarythin06-20

This first is by a noted classicist examining how the Greeks thought about what we would call biotechnology even though they didn't have the science to execute such things as sentient automatons and cross-species hybrids, before examining actual Hellenistic technology. Mayor does dryly note that many of these mythic creations (Talos, Pandora, the Minotaur) came into being due to tyrannical overreaches for power.

The other is a novel I've been intending to read forever, but haven't, because you just don't breeze through one of Jemisin's novels; this is basically prep for reading her "Inheritance" trilogy next year.

Speaking of "tyrannical overreaches for power", the Chinese are perfecting Killjoy's worst nightmare.

If I try to view any Twitter page, I get a 403 error.  Has been that way for a while now.  Something to do with telling my browser to not bend over and spread its cheeks.

That's how you get Car Wars :D

There are several pretty early "armed cars" short stories. I remember one in particular by Harlan Ellison when a commuter ends up stuck in a duel with a serious "autoduellist" through a bout of road rage. It ends with the commuter BARELY winning this nightmarish battle, only to be prompted by a whole flood of challenges from other such drivers...

Mind you those stories aren't any earlier than the old James Bond films with Austin Martin (?) with all the gadgets.

Yeah.

Can we please just cut China off from the civilized world, now?

The current maximum leader in Beijing seems to be executing that option himself.
