it was...but it wasn't that noteworthy.   by this point in the war it wasn't that common.

i think it was more for infantry support at this time.

as tiger, panther, and pz4 were more common at that point in the war.

and if they did encounter a pz3.  they really couldnt tell the difference between a pz3 and a pz4.

heck a panther and tiger 2 would have looked similar to the americans as they don't have both to compare with.

outside of the russian front,   you probably wouldn't see many people who survived enough fights to get familiar with the different variations of tanks.

heck even on the russian front =/

By 1942 as the Sherman entered the war in numbers the Germans were retiring the PZ3s as obsolete. The PZIV was a better platform for facing the newer Allied tanks because it could mount better guns then the PZ3.

They did meet, particularly in Africa. The 50mm guns had a lot of trouble with the Shermans. Here's a great memoir from an officer on Rommel's staff during that campaign.

Plus, by '42 I think that the 75mm guns of both the Pz IV and the Sherman (and Grant) outranged the 50mm of the Pz III, as well as British 6-pounders.  That sort of thing was less of a factor in some parts of France, but in the open desert battles of North Africa effective ranges played a role.

Panzer III's are by far the sexiest tank of WWII.
