I'm trying to install custom skins into WoT, but I haven't been able to find any recent guides on it. Any help would be appreciated

Your folders should look something like this:

I'm going through the same issue, been looking around for hours.

Say I found a skin from 2012 that I love-

Has the process of applying skins changed since then? Following the standard process of putting it in red mods> version > vehicles > nation > tank name I can get a skin from 2017 (That's ugly as can be, unfortunately) working just fine, but older ones refuse to.

I've noticed the older files have far less files.

Ex: Ferdinand, Ferdinand_Crash, Ferdinand_NM, Ferdinand_SM, , Ferdinand_Track all of which are dds files.

But in a newer skin, there's dozens and dozens of different files.

Is it still possible to get skins from a while back, or was there a point in time in which the process changed?

The problem is that you're trying to apply an SD skin to a HD tank and unfortunately it won't work (not without a massive amount of stuffing around anyway). The reason for the greater number of files on the newer (HD) skins is that whereas once, all the modules (Hull, Chassis, Turret, Guns etc) were all laid out on one set of maps, newer (HD) tanks have a separate set of textures for each individual module.
