Sorry guys!

I ended up not working on Saturday (I know, I'm a slacker) and didn't get to finish them up yesterday. The winners will be up soon™.

Good news (at least, hopefully it's good news) - there were so many awesome entries that I will be giving out more prizes! I also have something....special planned for the really great guides (although that's taking a bit longer than planned).

Wait dance210, did you see my previous questions in regards to my eligibility? I ended up editing my guide an hour or two after to replace the pictures, which had failed to load (bad weather = bad Wifi). Does that disqualify me mate? I'm kind of lazy and don't want to rewrite everything, so if you don't mind, please refer to my previous posts.Wait dance210, did you see my previous questions in regards to my eligibility? Hi all! After much deliberations, we have a final list of winners!

Thank you to everyone who participated. It was extremely difficult to select the winning guides from so many amazing entries! Even extending the number of winners, there were still some truly great guides that unfortunately didn't make the cut. I'm working on a way to showcase these guides to new players - it's not quite ready to be unveiled yet, but hopefully soon! :)

Winners of AMX M4 mle. 49 Liberté

Winners of 1,000 gold

Congratulations to the winners, and to everyone who participated!

[I know I'm late :( but am uploading this anyway to help new players. After all, we were all "noobs" once.]

This guide is for new players who want some immediate gratification. Sure, the IS-7 is a great heavy tank, but it’s at Tier X which is a very long grind. What if you’re just starting out in World of Tanks? Then the answer is …

MATILDA!

Matilda Picture in Garage

The Matilda is a British, Tier IV medium tank that many say is “OP,” or “over-powered,” at Tier IV. Truth is, when it’s top tier, it can dominate a battle. Even when it gets into a Tier V or VI game, it can still fire for effect and contribute to the team.

So, without further ado, here’s Major Pain Diaz’s Guide to the Matilda for New Players:

Modules

So, you made your way past the Medium II and Medium III and you’ve just unlocked your Matilda. In its base form, it’s OK at Tier IV but will get crushed at higher tiers. That means you need to build up some XP or use free XP to get better modules.

First, go for the QF 2-pdr Mk. X-B gun (1,800 XP). This gun has a rate of fire faster than most autoloaders. Once your crew is experienced, and with the right equipment, expect a reload time of less than 1.8 seconds!!! Put that together with 121 mm of penetration using standard AP ammo (145 mm with premium APCR), and Tier V heavies are not safe. (Churchill, KV-1, KV-1S, BDR G1 B, etc., often learn the hard way that the Matilda is not a pushover.)

Next, go for the upgraded turret, engine, and suspension. The turret gives you 30 more hit points (370 as opposed to 340) and the suspension is needed to carry it, though see “Equipment” below for a note about how you can mount the better turret before you have enough XP for the suspension. The turret will cost you 3,300 (2,100+1,200) XP because you need to unlock the 3-inch howitzer to get to the turret. The Leyland engine is 310 (a deal!), and the Mk. IIA suspension is 1,100 XP.

Do all the above upgrades before you worry about the radio. I recommend upgrading that last of all.

Equipment

My Matilda has a Medium-Caliber Tank Gun Rammer, Improved Ventilation Class 2, and Enhanced Horizontal Leaf Springs. This last one lets you mount the better turret (and gain 30 hit points) before you need to unlock and add the Mk. II A suspension. Further, keep it once you do upgrade the suspension as it prevents damage from both shots and impact.

The improved ventilation (a.k.a. vents) raises all your crewmembers’ skill by 5% which increases performance all around. Things like reload time, spotting distance, and traverse speed are all better with vents.

The rammer lowers your reload time increasing your rate of fire. I’ve been in some battles alongside other Matildas where we are all blazing away at 1.77 sec between shots that penetrate 121 mm. Think about the poor target getting hit at a rate of more than three shot every two seconds!

Exterior

I do have permanent camouflage on my Matilda which gives a small boost to concealment, but not much. Mostly, I like the look. None of the rest of the exterior enhancements matter. The Canadian maple leaf just makes me happy.

Consumables

First, I carry automatic fire extinguishers on all my tanks. When I catch fire, I can’t press the right number fast enough and am usually busy with other things. I only pay credits for them.

Second, carry both a small repair kit and a small first aid kit. If you get the large ones free for some mission, great, go with that. But 3,000 credits is an affordable price. Now that you can reuse them in the same game, it’s an even better deal.

Ammunition

The Matilda holds 92 rounds and has a choice of standard AP and premium APCR (armor piercing vs. armor piercing composite-rigid). The AP is perfectly good with 121 mm of penetration for most uses. However, I carry 10 rounds of APCR for well armored, higher-tier vehicles and for enemy Matildas. Even up to Tier VI, the AP round will penetrate the sides and rears of most enemies you’ll encounter. Save the APCR rounds for frontal shots. (See below on Strategy about weak spots.)

Crew Skills and Perks

For new players, remember that there are “Skills” and “Perks” that improve your crewmembers’ performance, but the two behave differently. A skill begins improving performance immediately. A good example is the repair skill that reduces repair time more and more as the skill increases towards 100%. A perk, on the other hand, has no effect until it builds to 100%.

The other thing to consider is that the first skill or perk builds quickly, the second less so, the third even less so, etc. So, what to do? I recommend working towards perks first or second. Work on skills later.

My Matilda crew advice is to first choose Brothers in Arms (BIA). (My crew has “Sisterhood of Steel”, but that’s another matter.) Once complete on all crewmembers, BIA improves most every performance characteristic that does not have a technical constraint. The next choices depend on the specialization of the crewmember. Here are my choices for skills and perks after BIA:

Commander: (1) Six Sense perk, then (2) Situational Awareness skill. The first tells you when you’ve been spotted even if the enemy is well outside your view range. The second improves your view range. These help you stay alive.

Gunner: (1) Deadeye perk, then (2) Snap Shot skill. Deadeye increases your chance of critical damage to modules or crew of enemies. Snap Shot reduces the aim circle when the turret is rotating. See my comment on annoying scouts, below.

Driver: (1) Clutch Braking skill, then (2) Smooth Ride skill. Clutch Braking lets you turn faster which means you can traverse your turret faster. Again, see comment on annoying scouts, below. Smooth Ride lets you fire on the move with greater accuracy. Some people might recommend Off-Road Driving but I don’t think the gain is worth it. The Matilda is slow; get used to it.

Loader: (1) Safe Stowage perk, then (2) Repairs. Safe Stowage reduces the chance of getting blow up by a hit to your ammunition, known as getting “ammo racked.” There is no other worthwhile skill or perk for your Matilda loader after that.

For the fourth skill, you probably want to start Repairs so your tracks get back on faster. For the loader, you could choose Firefighting. But your fourth skills are a long way off. You won’t need my advice by then.

Strategy Hints

1) Know the weak spots of your opponents. For example, when facing a Churchill, the frontal armor is 177 mm. You will not penetrate it. However, the front face of the turret is only 88 mm. Your standard AP ammo will go right through! How about the “Stronk Tenk,” KV-1? The front of the turret has some weak spots so you might penetrate … at close range … sometimes. But the frontal armor is not as thick. The the part near the machinegun port and headlight has an effective thickness of almost 90 mm, but a Matilda can penetrate that. The upper and lower parts are thinner but because of the Matilda’s small caliber gun (the 2 pdr is only 40 mm) you will mostly get ricochets there. (As an aside, the KV-1 is another favorite tank of mine. Be nice to them, please.)

2) Angle your armor against other Matildas, TDs, and higher-tier tanks, and learn to “side scrape.” Your front and side armor is 75 or 70 mm thick and is angled giving effective thicknesses of about 90 mm on the front. That’s pretty good at Tier IV but you’ll get killed if you rush head on into a KV-1. If you angle at about 45 degrees to the enemy, you increase your thickness to over 120 mm on the sides. Side-scraping is the practice of protecting the front of your tank with an obstacle (rock, building) and only showing the side to the enemy. A Matilda should side-scrape at about a 40-degree angle to the enemy. Your turret will still be vulnerable so don’t sit there too long.

3) Annoying scouts will try to circle-strafe you. Fortunately, most of the fast, little scouts can’t easily penetrate you. (The exception is the Lutz with upgraded gun. Stay away from them.) Here’s where Clutch Braking (driver skill) and Snap Shot (gunner skill) are good. When a scout tries to circle me, I use auto-aim (right click the mouse) and turn my Matilda as fast as possible with the enemy. Mostly, they die. If they get lucky and blow off a track, use your repair kit quickly. (I keep my repair kit in the middle position so track repair is 5-5 on the keyboard.)

4) Auto-aim. The Matilda is one of the few (only?) tanks where auto-aim works well in many situations. In my Cromwell or MT-25 I’ll use it when I’m circle-strafing but otherwise it’s better to aim. However, the Matilda has a very high-velocity gun. Leading a target at 50 meters or so is not that important with that gun. This means that if someone comes by at close range, the Matilda can score hits even on a fast-moving scout using auto aim.

5) Pick your opponents carefully at Tier V and Tier VI. Given a choice, go after the O-I Exp. instead of the better armored O-I. Go for the French BDR G1 B rather than the British Excelsior. And only go after the KV-2 if it’s distracted by other tanks. (The sides and back of the KV-2’s turret are easy for the Matilda to penetrate.)

6) Do the Campaign missions to earn credits and get crew members. The Matilda can do the medium tank missions in the first campaign, StuG IV. If you complete four of the branches, you’ll have four female crew members each with the Sisterhood of Steel (SoS) perk and one other perk or skill automatically. (Sisterhood of Steel is the same as BIA for male crew members. However, females can never have BIA and males can never have SoS so mixed crews are at a disadvantage.)

That’s all I have to say about the Matilda. I’m certainly not the best Matilda player out there, or even close to the best World of Tanks player but I do OK. Here’s a little evidence for the empirically minded.

  • While my overall win rate is 50%, I am at 55% wins in the Matilda.
  • Damage ratio is 1.42 meaning I cause 42% more damage than I take.
  • Kill ratio is 1.46 meaning I kill almost three enemies for every two deaths I suffer.
  • My Matilda causes 373 damage to enemies per game on average with another 77 assisted. And, I fire for effect (cause more damage than I have hit points) about half the time.
  • Maximum damage in a battle was 1,749. That happened in a Tier VI game where I also earned a High Caliber. (see below)
  • Maximum killed in a battle is six which I’ve done on a few occasions.

Enjoy your Matilda!
