The amount of intolerance, especially in a foreign language forum section, astounds me.

Bon courage!

I'm not intolerant, I completely understand that without the french we would most likely have still been a colony for a long time thereafter, however, today isn't about the french contributions, it's about our want to be free in the first place...

Yay us, USA USA USA *Toot*

Ok, so first intolerance, now ignorance... So sad when the OP just wanted to say something nice FOR the USA.

Not quite, depends on how you read the translation: "Thanks to France, the United States have their independence"

While it may be read as a "Happy Independence Day from us French" it can also be read as "Without us, you'd still be a colony, so thank us"...

I'm not saying he's wrong, I'm just saying the way is was written is not needed on today, the day of our countries birthday, let us have our day, and remind us of your contributions the other 364 days of the year okay...

....OK.....I don"t speak French and used an online translation- ....I simply wanted to thank the French for making US independence possible because without French money, troops, and especially the French fleet the outcome of our Revolution is not a certainty.....that doesnt mean the colonists wouldn't have won in the end but that victory may have been many years and lives later or not at all....thanks France for your help!!!!  Happy 4th of July.

Seriously? The "birthday"? Again with the ignorance. And it's "country's".

Imagine the delight the day we "invented" oxygen... Phew, we could all breathe a sigh of relief, literally.

Be more inclusive. Be more tolerant. The rest of the world will thank you instead of resent you.

Got any more parts for guns? Because you have an obscene amount of triggers...

I'm sorry I took the short and simple way of saying things versus the long, 100% politically correct way of saying things... I figured people wouldn't want to read a lengthy paragraph of what technically defines the beginning of america as a nation as we know it, and the history that was here long before the European religious refugees settled here because they were facing eradication in their home nations... I figured people would want the short "Legally, the USA started on this date" instead...

So, please tell me again why YOU were triggered by someone expressing, in French, their thanks for where the USA is today?

Wait, never mind, you aren't worth talking too. You and all your alts can chew on it all you want, you're yet more fodder for my ignore list.

Because when translated it says "Thanks to France, the United States have their independence", which while true, can come off as someone trying to one up somebody, or look down on somebody... (Even the OP said they used an online translator to write it in french)...

Wording is a careful thing to consider, because if not done properly things can be taken the wrong way...
