To this day, the RTS genre remains one of the most underappreciated game genres of all time.

RTS is still my favorite genre. My favorite game of all time is Age of Empires II. The most recent RTS game I played was Company of Heroes 2 (which was really just an unbalanced mess).

I was wondering if anyone knows of more recent RTS games (within a reasonable, >$40 price tag), that are any good and would be worth getting into. I've had a the RTS itch for quite some time now, but my searches haven't turned up anything positive.

I have an old game called Soldiers of Anarchy.

It is a well done post-apocalyptic 3rd person RTS, where you control a squad of guys/gals.

You arm them and they can control vehicles and tanks and attack helicopters.

If you are interested, PM me your address and I'll mail you the disk.

Just send it back when you are done - no rush.

I am interested in this as well. I loved Age of Empires I and II (although III left a LOT to be desired, sadly enough). Since then, however, I haven't found much.

The one game I can think of that's in the same genre is Factorio, which was quite fun, and can be quite immersive. I would definitely suggest trying Factorio, especially since its only $20 on Steam. Definitely worth the money in my opinion.

They updated the Age of Empires series.  No longer owned by Microsoft.  Been tempted to buy it, but I'm not sure how big the player base is, or which sites host it.  That series was a lot of fun.  One of my favorites as well.

Played Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak a bit, doesn't seem too bad so far.

That they do. I have all three Wargames and loved everyone of them.

I wish there was a way to slow down or speed up the game speed.

They're making a remastered version of the original Age of Empires. Might want to keep an eye on it:

I really hope that lives up to the original two. If it does, it will definitely be worth picking up. Even if it doesn't quite, it may still be worth it for nostalgia's sake.

It's not new, but....

The best RTS ever made was Total Annihilation.

The original is still available on Steam.

You can try the Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations. I bought a copy of that game but could not understand how to play it. There are too many military weapons names like jet fighters, specific munitions, etc.

Maybe you can figure out on how to play that game?

Honestly I'm thinking about re-downloading AOE2 off of steam. There seems to be a pretty active community.

I cannot ever concede any RTS to AOE2.

AoE was and still is a great RTS, but TA is the best of all time, have you tried it?

I'm not that big into RTS games, though I do play some.

I'd recommend Halo Wars 1 and/or 2. Both are pretty cool and easy to get into.
