I would normally stick this in the universe thread as another example of what could happen but this is the real deal this time folks.

Sooner or later a very active sunspot was eventually going to form at a spot that will directly effect earth on an eruption. Well it has finally arrived and its a monster.

Its already tossed off two massive blasts on the far side of the sun that would have shut the power down and wrecked the ionosphere on earth if they had hit.

With the sun's rotation that death star laser will be turning to face earth in a few days and its looking like the spot may actually intensify in activity.

Time to dust off those SHTF plans gents. ;)

I have heard nothing about any danger, im sure if it was a real threat something would be said

What would be said publicly? Run for the hills the powers going down for possibly years? Oh my..

Can you imagine the absolute chaos an announcement of that nature would bring about? Food line riots and gas lines around the block on every station and mass panic.

No. If this is an actual global threat you won't hear a peep past the watchdogs and some generic messages like to watch out for 'local' disruptions etc if the government decides to try to give some warning.

Also nothing may come of this if no eruption happens when the spot is within the arc of earth but if it does then Bad Things™ will happen.

I'm just pointing out that this is going to be one of those times the chances of something Bad happening actually approach the realm of possibility.

come on dude something would be said, losing the power grid would be catastrophic its not something they would keep to themselves

it would ba a huge EMP pulse, planes would fall from the skies, you think that would be news

I expanded my first post but to reiterate it would not be to the governments benefit to warn the general populace. This would not be due to some evil intent but to ensure they could get troops to all the major distribution centers and get the police and national guard ready for the ensuing chaos. No. The first thing you would know of an upcoming blackout event would be troops showing up at the malls and on ramps and such.

It's a real threat. It's just a matter of time before earth is in the crosshairs.

So this happened hours ago, and the sun is about 8 light-minutes away from Earth, and solar radiation [obviously] travels at light-speed...

...so i think we're fine guys...

So you can't see the threat this poses? It's not even a matter of tinfoil hatting. Right now this very second a massive sunspot that formed on the far side of the sun in a position that when it faces earth means ANY eruption will bullseye us and these wont be typical eruptions. These are massive blasts not the normal streams and puffs. Again if either of those blasts had hit earth it would be over technology wise. Instant transportation right back to the 18th century. I suggest you look up some documentaries on what happens when the lights go out due to solar or emp attack on the global power grid. Dark stuff man dark dark stuff.

Well if burning down your house solves the pest problem then yes.

For now. Those blasts happened on the far side of the sun. The spot that is tossing them off is rotating towards us like the death star on the rebel moon. Once it lines up and fires..

Yes I do, of course.

But, like i said, the sun is 8 light-minutes away. If something were to happen, it would have happened by now.

If it happens, will it make any difference if I knew ahead of time ? Nope.

I edited my post to explain but again the spot isn't facing us yet. That's about a week away. Also again if no blast happens when its in earths arc then no problems and disaster dodged. But what if it does toss off a blast? From the looks of it the chances are actually within the realm of probability and not just theory.

Sadly for the majority if a global blackout did happen it would be the end. No way to feed the billions without our high tech infrastructure. However some of us don't live in the city and know how to grow food using only sunlight and rain. We will survive.

Solar plasma does not travel at light speed.

The Day the Sun Brought Darkness

On March 13, 1989 the entire province of Quebec, Canada suffered an electrical power blackout. Hundreds of blackouts occur in some part of North America every year. The Quebec Blackout was different, because this one was caused by a solar storm!.....On Friday March 10, 1989 astronomers witnessed a powerful explosion on the sun. Within minutes, tangled magnetic forces on the sun had released a billion-ton cloud of gas. It was like the energy of thousands of nuclear bombs exploding at the same time. The storm cloud rushed out from the sun, straight towards Earth, at a million miles an hour.

Yes, it would make a difference. For example, if you know it's coming then don't be in your car on the road in the middle a desert when it arrives or in your car on the road through a mountain pass in the middle of winter.
