I'm been wondering why the Sheridan is so poor at penning stuff at long range. Then, by running my mouse over the ammo icons in garage I noticed the pen drops from a poor 236 at 50m to a terrible 189 at 500m. Thats a 20% drop. I'm told (you have to own the tank to check) that all the high tier lights are screwed by this pen dropping off a cliff

Since then I've been trying to find other tanks that lose pen anywhere near the tier ten lights. Notable results:

  • M48 Patton (not a light) pen drops from 268 at 50m to 258 at 500m. (5%) Seems about right.
  • T49 (Light!) with its 90mm tier 9 gun: pen is 212 at 50m, 193 at 500m (9%)  - so at 500m, the T49 has better pen than the Sheridan. What on earth were they thinking?
  • T54lwt (another t9 light with a Tier 8 gun) pen drops from 208 at 500m to 184 at 500m (9%). So here we have a tier 8 gun delivering almost same pen at 500m as the tier ten lights

Players are asked to contribute their own data illustrating how totally hosed up the tier ten lights are regarding pen drop off.

NB: if anyone has had any success at all penning anything with the premium round on a Sheridan, please post and tell us how you did it, because my HEAT does do anything.

The Rhm has 246 at 50m and 193 at 500m even though it's supposed to be the sniper of the lights lol, coupled with terrible gun handling.

Um, lights aren't snipers.  They are suppose to get in close, don't see why you are here crying like a little princess who lost her teddy.

So you mean heavies and mediums are supposed to be snipers?

Don't Chai-snipe with light tanks. They aren't 500m "snipers"

This thread is an in game vehicle comparison, independent of playstyle. However, in my case I find the low pen at long range a problem when getting early spots on maps like airfield, swamp, steppes, serene coast, etc, etc, but then failing to pen those tanks I spotted. Also, when up close to the action a Sheridan will often spot stuff much further back - TDs, arty, but again, GL trying to pen them.

(One time, I saw so far back, I think I saw '9435' guarding the arty)

If you want to snipe, use the derp(seriously). Yes, the ROF sucks and you don't do much damage to frontal armor, but the damage is consistent.  You hit, you damage, and knock off a module or two.  Once the field thins a bit, go in and get flank/rear shots for big damage.

Again, this thread is not about playstyle. Its a discussion on the huge pen dropoff that the tier 10 lights seem to have. We've seen thread after thread on the alpha / dpm of the tier 10 lights, but nothing on this.

However, on the topic of DERP on Sheridan - I decided against that as you have to have vstab to run the DERP, and you dont when you run the 105, so you get a free slot for vents - which adds 13 m viewrange (and other stuff)
