I'm still pretty new (6 months) so from my perspective, arty has always been part of the game.  It used to drive me bonkers when I started so I bought a little tier III SU-26 to fool around with so I could better understand how they work.

Anyway, so many people complain about arty in the Forums I'm now wondering when it was introduced and why?  If the game was fine without it, why did WG/WoT put it in?

Arty has been in since Beta days....

And then it was fine, the Hummel and the Su-14 was the end tier arties and they saw tier 10 MM , as tier 6 arty.

So they could focus a tier 10 heavy and chip away on him all game and it wouldn't do much unless they got a lucky pen on a weakspot.

And they where great to dig out hulldown targets that was a pain in digging out with regular tanks.

Later on WG came up with the great idea to add up to tier 8 arties , but they still saw tier 10s so it was still OK.

Then came the greatest ideas of them all and they added tier 10 arty , and the real clickening begun, now tier 10 arties saw tier 8 tanks and one-shot them like nothing. And this was the beginning of the pure arty hatred we see today.

Essentially bad map design.  Originally it was put in to root out tanks in an advantageous position.  Bad map design led to those positions.

Hubris is what has kept it in the game.  WG has made several attempts at breaking into Esports, but arty and too wide RNG have always made them a laughing stock of competitive gamers.

For them to have made a statement that if this adjustment didn't fix arty they would remove it just shows how adept they became at shooting themselves in the foot.

NA's input will never improve it, this is just a cash cow.

teams camped so they put arty in to stop it. they have some videos from the developers on the WOT site that explain the development of the game and why they added certain things.

FYI, WOT has stated that they never said " that if this adjustment didn't fix arty they would remove it " it popped up on a tank blog.

It wasn't "introduced". It's been part of the game since the very beginning.

I wonder how they will assess the viability of the Stun mechanic. # of whine threads per day, perhaps?

Arty allows everyone a chance to destroy anyone at anytime, no matter their skill level. This is the main reason the self-proclaimed better players don't like the mechanic. It allows those they see as less than themselves, the opportunity to eliminate them from the battle. Causing years of therapy and heavy meds to repress the thoughts and memories of a tomato beating them in the game.

Like the man sayz, its a skill counter.  So what kind of players do you suppose that means are attracted to it?

So would limiting arty to always being middle or bottom tier solve the problem(s) and make everyone (other than the upper tier arty players) happy?

Arty is supposedly meant to "prevent camping" and promote more dynamic gameplay.   Instead, with the current tomato player base, it promotes camping.

again, camping in the interwebs is usually a good thing, it means taking up a position of advantage.

meanwhile camping on the NA forums means idiots sitting at base waiting for the match to be decided.

it counters the first, not the second. nothing counters the second except bot reports and bans for inaction.

That punishes arty players with top tier SPG's.

Besides, it'll set Thorny off on another of his "I DEMAND COMPENSATION!!!!" tirades.  Not worth the read.

The biggest problem now is that WG is so bad at understanding its game and evaluating the effects of changes that they inevitably do exactly the wrong thing and make the problem even worse.

If it's been here since the beginning, what evidence was there that people would be camping?

If you want to play arty, I'd suggest you to grind it from other lines (Chaffee for USA, Valentine for UK, AMX 12t for France, or KV-2 from Russia), low tier arty is horrible.

On the other hand, arties get top tier a lot more often than other classes, which doesn't really make sense, I wish my O-Ho or IS-3 had the MM of my SU-14-2.

Let's take Fiery Salient as an example, you have 5 heavies on each team, one match has arty and the other doesn't.

In the first match, heavies would work the middle or try to push the hill as otherwise arty would farm them to death.

In the other, they just sit on the hill pretending they will eventually shoot each other until TDs/Meds on the middle kill them.

WG's own definition of why arty was introduced into the game.    Forget your meds today ?   :teethhappy:

Didn't say I wanted to play it, only learn how it works.  Not really my thing.  I occasionally play a game or two late at night before logging off.

Fixed that for you. Fiery salient is a godawful map that should have been removed long ago.
