The main complaint about arty is that they can shoot with high accuracy at targets they cannot see.  Those being shot at also feel that they have no way to counter the arty.  Would it be possible to place the actual SPGs off the map and put the player in the role of the Forward Observer?  For example, instead of driving the Grille, you are in a SdKfz 253.  You have to actually get within draw range and put the reticle on the spot you want to hit.

No minimap firing, no God Mode. The first shot you call in is at max dispersion. Each successive shot fired is incrementally more accurate (based on crew skill) down to a minimum dispersion.  Reticle bloom is based on how far from the last targeted shot the next one is.  Moving the target 10 meters won't have much, if any, effect.  Moving it 150 meters might put you back to max bloom, depending on crew skill, tank characteristics etc.

The benefits of a system like this are:

  • If you are taking artillery fire, you know there is a FO in LOS draw range.
  • The first round is highly inaccurate, giving you a chance to take cover.
  • Successive rounds are more accurate allowing arty to dig out stationary targets.
  • Vision control becomes even more important.
  • Vulnerable FO vehicles must make difficult choices about how much to expose themselves for the best shots.

Drawbacks:

  • Harder to eat while playing arty.

So, just like how arty is now, with movement related to bloom, a low health thin skinned vehicle, and the first round will always miss unless you have sacrificed enough dissidents to the gulag.

Yeah, no.

And if you're going to choose a vehicle for this "forward observer" role, at least make it something that can fight back.  The Sd. Kfz 253 had an MG 34 as its only weapon.

An Sd. Kfz 234/2 or an Sd. Kfz 234/4 at least has a fighting chance.

Hell if you want to make it really interesting, a Wurfrahmen 40 would raise one hell of a ruckus on the forum.

Various Pz IIs were also used as FO vehicles.  As were Stuarts.  Just spitballing ideas.  You could really do it with any light tank, but the emphasis was on running away and not on fighting directly.

Yeah, no.

Except that right now arty fires from God mode outside of LOS.  I suppose Bert would be relatively close.  OK, we just replace all arty with Bert.

Just anything that forces artillery players to actually leave cap and have to deal with line of sight and render distance would make the game better. Although FO's should not have high camo values simply for the fact that they wouldn't really shoot themselves, more so they would just call in strikes.Camo ratings similar to heavies perhaps.

Arty would never hit anything.  The odds of a target remaining static until arty hits are slim to none.  The ROF would have to be increased substantially to accommodate that.  It's better that your able to kill them.  Your FOs are the tanks/lights who spot.  The God's view is the map and plotting board in the FDC.  I would like to see the God's view map not be live.  Meaning, you won't be able to see trees fall, fences break, etc..

No, why should the Spg's be the only ones forced to be anywhere near realistic. No reason to make it easy on beer guzzling, twinkie eaters in their heavies.

Amen. Play any tier 8+ match and it's obvious most people play just as lazily in high tier TD's anymore as well. It's not any more fun to have a 128mm shell slide through your thickest armor like it's made of a wet beverage straw wrapper from 500m away than it is to get derped by a 200mm shell from orbit.
