I am still trying to grind my way to the top gun but it has been less than pleasant. The 20pdr feels next to useless at tier 9 and the low damage per shot prevents the tank from reaching a much better potential. I feel outgunned by anything and everything i meet. Light tanks have better guns than me, lower tiered tanks, arty (who always seems to find my loader and ammorack). How can i work around the 20pdr gun. I try to go with the medium tanks because the gun is more similar to them but if there are not as many heavies i try to use it to assist the other heavies or take shots when others cant. I am avearging about 1300 damage per game. Should i change this tank's playstyle? I am starting to get tired of getting called a useless heavy, yes i know i am not that good in it but i could be a lot worse. Also i am trying to fire standard ammo as much as possible because i dont have the credits to fire gold rounds. I only load gold for the impentrable fronts of the Japenese heavies and the maus line.

Imho you should free xp the gun as is the only thing worth in that tank. Going around in a big tank with the Fv4202 gun is no fun at all lol. If you don't have enough free xp just run some boosters on some premium tank, or some good damage dealing tank you might have and use that free xp to get the top gun. You will need a big wallet too as shots are quite expensive but fun! Good luck!

The Conq with the Top gun is amazing. Its incredibly accurate and has a very fast reload. One of my favorite t9 of all time.

I'm in the exact same boat with the Conqueror grind.  So painful with the stock gun, but I'm about to need my Free XP for other things (ST-I grind starting on Friday), so I'll persevere.  I think you're doing all you can do; be more of a medium, never play the front lines, and look for hull down opportunities.  And at least always use an XP booster to get through that gun ASAP!

Don't buy tanks with free-xp, use free xp for upgrades, then no stock grinds...or minimal stock grinds...

Don't ever buy a new tank until you have already ground the XP to unlock all upgrades.  Voila!  No painful grinds.....

It just takes a little more patience and foresight.

Or just spend free XP if you want......

ST-I was my first tier 9.  I had no free xp and played it stock.  When I finally got the top gun, it was like Christmas.  That tank is a monster.

the problem with that is it costs 111,300 xp to get the top gun, more than the actual tank. I always activate a 2x xp booster so that the grind is half as long.

I finished the grind to get the Conqueror (I couldn't wait to get my crew out of the Caernarvon. That tank was hell for me) over three weeks ago and had enough free XP to get the upgraded Turret, Top Radio, Top Tracks, and next to Top Engine. I did not have enough for the Top Gun. So I tried not to play it until I got enough free XP to get that Top Gun but I was curious so played it a few times over the last two weeks. Lost all six of those games. But I could see it's potential. I got the Top Gun a few days ago and the Conqueror is a much better contender now. I will just get that Top Engine from playing the tank. No need to use any more free XP on it that I need for other tanks coming up.

So, I (tried) to wait until I had the Top Gun before I played the Conqueror. You need the upgraded Tracks and Turret to even mount the Top Gun and probably want to at least upgrade the Engine a few times (there are three Engine upgrades. sigh.) before you play it. So it takes a lot of free XP to get this tank ready for combat.

Indeed, it sucks not having the top gun.  But it's so much better when you get it, so stick with it and use your 200% XP boosters.  Do the final engine upgrade last- it's nice, but expensive.

I heard the FV215b is going to be replaced, maybe in the next patch.  I wonder if WoT is going to let us keep it, ala the Foch?  I mean, keep it as a reward tank while also getting the new one.  That would be cool, as I am very close to unlocking it.

Word is that they will make the FV215 B a special tank like the Foch 155 was done. Any British TD crew will work in it without penalty.

Not heavy crew?  Is the 183 getting the same treatment?

Pretty sure that was an error on MountainLion1's part.

Yes, the stock gun grind is extremely bad.  230 damage per shot as a heavy at tier 9 is just horrible.  The thing is, you need to upgrade turret first before you can get the final gun.  So it takes a lot of free XP.

The conqueror with upgraded gun is decent, but not great.  Because of its weak hull / side armor, it is pretty horrible at sidescraping.  You basically have to get to hull down position even though its gun depression is not great.  Find a way to get some debris, dead tanks in front of you.

Once you get the top turret, you can at least hulldown without every tank you'll see penetrating right through your mantlet.

You really need to play as a support HT only, until you get that top gun. The alpha and pen are low, but the DPM isn't bad, and if you can get shots on the softer parts of enemy tanks you can really make them hurt. I'd advise you to find a big scary inviting target for the enemy, and follow it around. Wait for enemies to be so busy engaging it, then pop out and put shots downrange while they're distracted/reloading. See if you can flank around isolated HTs and take advantage of their distraction.

Is the entire British heavy line garbage until tier 10?

Churchill 7 made me want to [edited]kill myself and I'm not excited starting the BP.

Currently, the ONLY good tank in that line is the Conqueror.

The Churchill VII, however, is (IME) the worst.

I just started playing it, only 3 games so far but I don't mind the 20lb'er, it's RoF and accuracy makes up for it's low alpha. I don't think they're great tanks but the guns are awesome, they need to boost their mobility so they can exploit it better, they're pretty much a support tank, more like a slow medium a la SP. The biggest thing I hate about both the Caernarvon and Conquerer is they get ammo racked constantly, I even have Safe Stowage and I get racked at least once every single battle. Not sure if a wet rack would make any difference.

Thank you for the advice everyone, I ended up spending 7$ to buy some gold to convert some 30k xp. I already had the top engine from the centurion 7/1, and had grinded out the turret and tracks, so now I am fully upgraded and it is a lot better. now to play about 2 hours a day in it for the next 10 days to unlock the FV215b (with xp boosters of course). And then starts the credit grind.

Free xp to me is not something I have a massive stockpile of because I normally don't save it up for months at a time to blow it for a tier 9. I tend to spend it on tanks to upgrade tracks and help shorten stock grinds. It is not something I save tens of thousands of.

The ammorack and crew are easily killed, The loader is especially susceptible to poking his head out of the turret to get his face knocked off by arty.
