Tank Roll Call: M36B1

Hello again readers, and welcome to another article of Tank Roll Call.

in this article I will cover the American M36B1. This one was tough to dig up any real good information on but bear with me. I promise, it will be worth your time.

In October 1944, there was a lack of M10A1 hulls to carry the M36 tank destroyer turret with its powerful tank-busting 90mm gun. There was however, a plentiful amount of Sherman M4A3 late hulls. With some minor alterations needed, mainly to accommodate the TD's larger ammo rounds. The result was the M36B1. It had the advantage of a thicker hull and even a bow machine gun. Tank Destroyers at the time did not have bow machine guns. Only 187 conversions were done, and handful of photos of these beasts in action. This made the M36B1 an excellent support weapon. Probably scared the hell out of the German's too. Seeing as, at first glance, it could be confused with a M4A3 and bang, 90 mike-mike hits your tank.

The M36B1 is feature a hybrid construction of the M36 and M4A3. The M4A3 hull is constructed with welded armor plates. It would have it's Ford GAA V8 engine mount in the rear. While, a power shaft would run under the floor of the hull to the transmission. At the front would be the driver wheels and at the rear would be the idler wheels. Each side would have 3 heavy duty bogies, and each bogie would have 2 road wheels. Each bogie would also have a return roller with a skid plate at the top of the bogie. The bogies would be just bolted to the side of the hull.

The turret would be the turret from the M36 tank destroyer. It would be made of steel and would be open topped, but there was an armored roof kit available. The turret had the powerful M3 90mm anti-tank gun. Unlike the M4A3, there was no coaxial machine gun. Some of the M3 90mm guns would have a muzzle break, while others would not. From what I understand from research, the armored roof kit and muzzle break would be in the field, and most often would not be mounted due to time need to mount these kits. To call it an armored roof kit is an oversimplification. The kit did not mount tight to the top of the turret and it really didn't have armor to speak of, but it would protect from raining shrapnel and prevent grenades from being thrown into the turret. However, it would also take longer to escape from the vehicle if it was damaged. I guess you could call this a mixed blessing.

According to Steve Zaloga, they were deployed to tank destroyer battalions including the 605th, 654th, 705th and 813th during the Battle of the Bulge and fought until Germany surrendered. They achieved a very good combat record.

Data: M36B1
Crew: 5 (driver, commander, gunner, radio operator, loader)
Combat weight: 30.8/35 tons
Length: 5.48 m
Width: 2.62 m
Height: 2.72 m
Engine: Ford GAA (520hp petrol)
Power/Weight: 11.8hp/ton
Top speed: 48 km/h (30 mph)
Main armament: 90mm M3 AT gun
Gun elevation: -10/+20
Ammunition carried: NA (my guess is 40-50 rounds)(AP, APCR, and HE)
Secondary armament: one Browning M2 50cal. and one bow mounted Browning M1919A4 30cal.
Hull armor: 63.5/38.1/38.1
Turret armor: 76/25/25
Total Production: 187

So, onto my thoughts on if the M36B1 was added to the game. Well, I'd make it a tier 6 premium tank destroyer, which, the American tech tree really needs. Right now the only American premium TD's are the M56 Scorpion and the T28 HTC. I'd go with most of the hull characteristics of the M4A3 hull and use the turret characteristics of the M36 turret, when it comes to traverse, gun elevation, armor, and so on. I'd give it around 700 HP. More than an M36 but less than a M4A3E8. I'd also mix the camo stats, going for Stationary: around 14%, Moving: around 9.7%, and Firing: around 4%. I'd use the base spotting range from the M36.

When it comes to the model, I'd like to see the stock open top turret of the M36 on a M4A3 hull. Just saying, I'd like to see this because the biggest chunk of the photos of the M36B1 does not have the armored roof. I'd also like to see a big white star on the engine deck. I found film of a M36B1 test firing and it had a white star on the engine deck. Much like the Cromwell B from WoT.

Well, thank you for reading and happy hunting,

Make it happen WG.  Forget all these fake/overdone/copypasta/blueprint Soviet tanks and put in something real!

I agree, this would make a great well needed American premium TD. Nice work.

Certainly being based on the Sherman hull would allow it to play like a medium better then the Jackson which could certainly provide a couple of ways to play it, which would be a rare thing in the current state of the game.

And having the Jackson's 90mm APCR will certainly let it deal with higher tier targets much easier then other tier 6 premiums.

90mm gun on a Sherman hull? Sign me up! The Jackson is my favorite to play!

I could see this as a Tier VI Premium American TD. I'd give it a little more of the Sherman's HPs (720-730).

Should be a tier VII premium TD. This thread is just the latest to bring up the M36B1, there have been others pleading to WG to make this TD available as a premium over the years.

It would have to be beefed up to 800 HP to be competitive at Tier VII. That would make sense to me.

It most deferentially would open up some options that a normal TD wouldn't have.

I think 720 is a stock Ez8 hp and I know 730 is a Jumbo's hp with the stock turret. Still 720 or 730 wouldn't be bad but I doubt WG would even think of going that high for balance reasons. I doubt 700 even. I'd guess maybe 680-690 like the Jackson.

I really wouldn't be surprised but I hope this post is at least informative. Comes down too, we need to light a fire under WG's butt and get them to make this. There is still a ton of prototype and limited production vehicles WG could use but instead they are coming up with fake tanks and more clones of what they already have in game. We all need to make our voices heard.

It would need more than that. The pen isn't high enough for a tier 7 TD. You would need 170 pen like the 90 mm AT Gun T15E2 on the T25/2. Well even 170 pen kind of lacks at tier 7 for a TD. It would also need better camo and view range.
