So in order to get derp for my M4 I spent 3 of my 45 gold. Then, in order to get derp for my SU-5 I spent 37 of my 42 gold, leaving me with 5 gold left. Am I spending too much on derp, and should've used that on APCR or HEAT or whatever whatnot pro players use?

I am not sure what you are talking about. However,

- You can buy a premium shell with credit.

- Derp guns mainly use HE.

Good Luck!!

Do not spend gold.  At all.  Until you understand the game economy a bit better, never spend gold on anything.  Use silver.

When you service your tank. MAKE SURE YOU SET any premium shells from gold to silver and consumables from gold to silver.

You do not have to spend gold on shells, select the drop down menu and change it to credits like so:

Under the "purchase" column, hit the little gray drop down arrow and change from gold to credits.

A few things with gold, it is not recommended that you convert gold to credits nor use gold to purchase any sort of shell or consumable.

Save your gold for a prem tank or prem time.

Small amounts of gold should (IMO) be reserved for demounting complex equipment when you move from one tank to the next so you dont take a bath in the credit department to drive properly set-up tanks.

If you have a slightly larger gold budget, then it should probably be used for re-training your commander as you move from tank to tank in a line so you can make more consistent progress towards the 6th sense skill, which you really need.

Still more gold, and you can retrain entire tank crews as you move from tank to tank.

I have never spent a single gold coin on either ammo, or credit conversion.  Both of those can be had using credits you earn simply by playing the game and not sucking at it too badly.  Or even sucking very badly if you stay around tier 5 and dont spam premium shells.

I played some 800 battles or so before I discovered I could buy premium ammo with silver. Bah, Humbug! Anyway, now I only pay $ to buy premium time, or gold to shift essential hardware from tank to tank. Well, most of the time, anyway... :)

One thing, if you change from "buy with gold" to "buy with silver" on the ammo select, make sure after each patch that you double check it.  Wargaming has been known in the past to "accidentally" change the selector back to "buy with gold" -- Havent heard much of late, but... we are still talking about Wargaming here.

"Derp" is slang for stupid. You can Google the interesting origins of that. But when it comes to World of Tanks, "derp" is used to describe a howitzer. Any of the slow velocity howitzers you may find on some tanks, like the 152mm on the KV-2 or 105mm howitzers on the M4 Sherman or Pz4H.

When I started playing this game, using a low velocity howitzer on a tank was just considered stupid. Especially on the original Pz4 tank in game, which had the high velocity, high penetration gun from the Panther available. Only an idiot would use the howitzer!

Without being rude, you really should be back in tier 3-4 max learning the game instead of rushing up the tiers...
