*First off I have grown to absolutely hate arty for various reasons, this is not a anti/ pro arty thread.*

Before update 9.18 hit I played a game in my T92 on Swamp, the heavies were going castle as usual and I noticed that the enemy VK72.01 K had a red cross-hair next to his name.

He got spotted on his way up to castle and took a 1/2 hits, unfortunately for him I loaded an AP round. I shot him for just shy of 2000 DMG, killing him.

After the battle he pm'ed me saying that I am pure cancer....Poor fella

I must admit, I do miss the AP rounds on my T92. It could be incredibly infuriating to be waiting for ever to aim, then finally connecting, only to damage a track, but the one time in five or six that you got a good, solid connect on a Maus or JgdPz100 somewhat made up for it.

Of course, you had to be in a particular mood for that sort of thing. Usually you were more useful lobbing HE. Those other four or five times out of five or six, you contributed absolutely nothing to the team, so it was a bit of a gamble.

Quite why this is a topic of discussion right now, though, eludes me a bit.

Because you are the military historian also.

How often did arties shot AP/HEAT/APCR shells indirectly in real life at tanks or anything that "moves"?(Not bunkers.... although you can call some tanks in this game bunkers.)

history is not a video game.

first, in WW2, understand that "artillery" was not a piece of equipment. it was a combat duty. M4 sherman tanks performed artillery missions more often than anti-tank missions for example.

second, AT guns were "artillery".

third, AA guns were "artillery".

fourth, Naval bombardment was "artillery".

most forces classified all tanks that did not have turrets as SPG (self propelled guns) that belonged to the artillery command, be they siege tanks like the T95, or purpose built AT tanks like the ferdinand or some of the SU series.

so to respond to your question is not really possible, because the historical data does not say "the M12 is artillery and the M4 is not, so put the data into separate columns!"

the brief answer is that artillery killed more tanks than tanks did. how they did that is not documented well. there are plenty of documents on specific battles or specific instances of arty being used to take out tanks on the march, but they often lack any detail on how.  for example: https://trove.nla.go...rticle/38341013

It's a curiosity question. Like I wonder if some lucky brits or americans just donked a panzer 4 on it's head with an AP shell. Or landed an AP shell into a halftrack.

Well I meant it as a towed or self-propelled artillery that is land based. Not turreted and not dual purpose like those Russians i/su152s. However there must be some sort of records on somebody calling AP shells to be fired indirectly at a something that could move. (wheeled/tracked vehicle that is moving or stationary.)

I also did say indirect so a 17 pounder shot sky high landing on a combat car does count.

I also wonder if ever a point in any war with tanks. Sniping a comander's hatch was ever a thing? Even with ground infantry.

If it was your only target, maybe. Most tanks, especially at standard combat ranges would be firing center mass or so to ensure a hit. But if a commander's hatch was a known weak area it could be shot through, but would be more from above as the object would be to kill/injure the commander so from a lower/level position not a huge number of cupolas would give you odds of hitting. Early tanks maybe, but as periscopes became more common this became less advantageous.

I very much miss the AP shells in arty. They were entertaining at least. Now I am stuck with crap damage in tier 8 arty against tier 10/9 heavy armor vehicles. Just today hit a Foch 50 in the side direct hit in lorr 51 and it did all of 78 dmg. Then in FV207 had direct hits on jg100 for zero damage.  FOUR times in one battle.

there are many things we nostalgically miss about the old days of WoT.

for me, it was non brawling maps, and the beloved T-50-2, but those are both long gone...  never to reappear...

oh, as for AP rounds, the 261 was practically a TD.

Ensk:  3 successive Object 261 AP Rounds...

Hey IS7, see that round hit the E100 in front of you?  Keep pushing... ~30 seconds later you're on deck...

*yawn*  all while eating breakfast, or lunch.  so flowing, so dynamic, the game play...
