I am just about to upgrade to Charioteer. I see that the 105mm gun has pretty impressive penetration with the standard AP round, but a totally nerfed premium round with a far lower penetration with slightly greater damage. Is this deliberate on the part of WG or could it be a mistake?....

Hesh?  Like that on many high tier UK tanks.

It’s a high pen HE shell. You can either pen everything with the standard apcr, or go for increased alpha on softer targets like T34 hulls with the HESH.

you got 268 pen with the APCR. That's enough for most tanks you face. Use the HESH later in the game to farm damage.

It's a damage farming HESH round. Kind of a trait for many higher tier British tanks.

Edit: I am basically echoing everyone who has posted so far, so yeah.

Nope not a mistake the 105mm at gun L7 is a great gun. Only use the hesh as needed the standard round will do the job great.

Only thing I found wrong with the Charioteer was the gun dispersion says one thing and RNG say's an entirely different story . And the crew skill didn't even matter .

I wish I had the gun depression it has now when I grinded. Nifty little tank which I will buy again one day.

With this gun you're a Death Moon.... at tier 10 you become a Death Star.

The premium HESH is for people who understand that 210 pen is more than enough to go through the front of tier 6s, 7s, most 8s, and even some 9s and 10s, and as a result will let you farm damage like a madman. The 268 APCR is there for everything else.

I have over 500 games in the Charioteer.  In those games, I used all three ammo types.  I am totally convinced HESH is broken on this tank.  In those 500 games, I've used the premium on the lightest armored tanks in the game; T8 Rhms and Skorpians, and have NEVER done any damaging hits over 200.

I've gone to Youtube and seen videos where players are doing damage as expected with these rounds, but those games are from years ago. against heavier armored tanks.  So yeah, I totally believe HESH is not working on this tank.

The HESH is hilarious when top tier, fun to do 500+ damage to t6's. I'd recommend bringing 5-10 HESH and the rest APCR.

I love my Charioteer, but, as you stated the HESH is just not a dependable round against 8s, 9s and 10s you face the majority of the time. You can line up a HESH on the slab side rear of an E-75 turret or the rear of a Centurion and roll for a nice whopping juicy 200...uhm, yeah. I use it mainly as a meme round when I see a tier 6/8 match, just for the (expensive) giggles.

The HESH is Fun on Light Targets and a Great Finishing Move on heavily Damaged Tanks...        As mentioned above, it's like Driving a Baby Deathstar....        The Base Rounds are sufficient for pretty much anything you'll Face and the HESH if for the Laughs, both the 105 and 210 Pen are Useful for getting the Giggles Going....

To be honest, I'd rather have HESH than have HEAT on any Tank....      HEAT is just too Unpredictable more often than not, unless you REALLY need that Penning Shot, then it WILL Bounce....      HESH is a Hopped Up HE Round and does not Bounce in the Grand Sceme and Damage is Damage, even a Low Roll....
