Hi all!

I am missing something about how to play the  Type 5 Heavy.  I keep shooting the more expensive ammo, but I almost never see the high ( 1000 ) damage roll from it.  I get a little more than the standard ammo, but not enough to justify the cost.  Other than being a mediocre player ( in all tanks ), what am I doing wrong?  Why am I not getting big damage rolls?

Thanks!

It's HE damage, if you fail to pen you lose half the damage right away.  It is still better to shoot higher damage HE as there's more damage to do if you pen or don't.

Check out how he does it. Maximize HE spalling damage.

lt has very low penetration (less than KV2) but there are lots of weak armour out there

Shoot at sides and tops more.  You don't have to worry about ricochets.

Here I am, slightly shocked that someone with 20k+ battles doesn't know the very, very basics on how HE ammo works.

But, yes, it's because you aren't penetrating.  If you shoot a no-armor vehicle, you'll notice you'll get close to the 1400 damage of the premium HE ammo (as long as they have enough hp).

thicker frontal armor negates more damage than thinner side armor.

you will eventually get some big hits on thin targets like lights and mediums.

you wont see many big hits on heavies.

True, I will take more damage when I can get it!  Thanks!

Thanks, that was helpful!  I have seen a few other replays, and Foch plays way better than I do, but his per hit damage was not so out of line with what I am seeing.  Thanks for that!

Thanks!  Yea, shooting the top when I can really does work better.

Thanks!  I find the shooting down on the top is better than lower plate many times, which is surprising.

Hey Golruul, I would agree I don't have the best knowledge of HE, but I was expecting better damage per shot with this huge gun.  I get that HE has let pen, but was expecting better results than I am getting.  Since I usually fight the E100, Jg Pz, etc. there are not alot of times when I get to shoot the no armor tanks, but will take them when I can!  Thanks!

Fluffy, you said it.  I am shooting the heavily armored tanks and waay too often from the front.  When I do find a lower armor tank, I get more damage, but was hoping for better against the other big tanks.  Thanks!

Shoot the heavies in the commander cupola if close enough that way you splash down on thin roof armor.  If not close enough I usually shoot for the gun.  Low dmg but broken gun/dead gunner really ruin their day lol.

Unless you're shooting soft targets, or shoot someone in the side/[edited], you'll rarely see that 1k damage pop up.
