Hello Everyone!

We wanted to start a weekly “staff pick” where we share a topic we found in the community to start a pretty casual discussion.

However, under the circumstances this first post won’t be as lighthearted unfortunately.  As most of you are aware of R. Lee Ermey’s passing, we wanted to share a post that our own Chieftain made:

Spoiler

I can still remember waking up to him yelling "Mail Call" really early in the morning if I fell asleep with the TV on.  Though some of us have had more personal experiences with him, he will definitely be missed by all. He was a good man, marine, and entertainer.  In the words of the Chieftain, "he was one of the good ones."

awesome guy, I think his career could have been better as a actor, Hollywood kinda lost out on this gem because of his political views

Good Speed Lee, your missed but never gone from our hearts

I have a friend who met him at a trade show, said he was a super nice guy. He loved Vets and was a true friend to all of those who served. Rest In Peace and Thank you for your service and sacrifice!

I think that has more to do with being typecast than political views. I think he crossed the divide on politics where even if you disliked his politics you liked and respected the man. That said I believe that's the closest to politics anyone should get on this thread..... RIP

If you don't get this joke then watch Mail Call.

As I was growing up, my brother and father really enjoyed watching the History Channel together. Being more interested in Cartoons than history, I didn't share the same passion.

But "Mail Call" was definitely a show that we could all enjoy together, Since "Gunny" had such an energetic personality. It's sort of hard to believe, since he has always been such a constant. He's one of those guys that you sort of just expect to live forever.

Celebrity deaths never really hit me very hard, but this one hits pretty close to home. Truly the loss of a great man. He will be missed.

Many sources have cited interviews where he himself disagreed.

I never met the man, and only know of his service and the side of his presence that was reported on, or acted out.  From what I observed, his enthusiasm for the Corps and Veterans in general had me inclined to hold him in warm regard as my father was a disabled vietnam Veteran.

As a former Army puke myself (19K Tank Crewman), the Gunny was someone all of us enlisted and NCOs looked up to. He led by example, was firm but fair, and held true to his convictions. He will be missed. I'm sure he's at the pearly gates of Heaven dressing down St. Peter. o7 Semper Fi, Gunny.
