Heyo,

I've only been playing a day or two. Started with Blitz because it was on Steam before I realized that WoT was available and looked waaaay better than Blitz. I've been losing a LOT, but that's ok. I'll learn the gameplay eventually. My 32% w/r is boss ;)

My question is more about progression. I feel like I might be "doing it wrong". I played some light tanks and thought it'd be nice to try medium. But, I don't know the recommended way to get there. I think I have 3 options:
1. Unlock only what I have to, spend as little as I can, get to new tank, repeat. Don't bother with crew or consumables etc. because I will be "passing through" on the way to the tank I want.

2. Unlock crucial elements to help me be competitive, hang out with that tank for long enough to train the crew a bit and learn about playing that tank.

3. Unlock everything that tank has to offer, train crew as far as I can, play a ton of games, care about win-rate for each tank I play etc. etc.

I feel like I wasted a bunch of xp/credits going up lines just because they opened up. Randomly put parts on the tank. Spent a lot of credits on consumables. Didn't look far enough down the tech tree to realize I couldn't even get to the medium I wanted to try haha.

So, is it door number one, door number two or door number three to be most effective?

Thanks so much! Hope the question makes sense.

Go with Option 3. Well-trained crews are priceless and spending a good bit of time in the low-mid tiers will hopefully teach you how to play right. For lights, it'll teach you the need to stay mobile, to watch the map and be ready to relocate, how to get sneaky flanking shots, and how to scout properly.

Thanks 1Sherman!

I am headed for T-34/44 Soviet, so right back to MS-1 until it's maxed and then through the T-60/70/80 the same way?

when you progress to your next tank- retrain the crew to that tank - by the tier 10 you should have a 3 to 4 skill crew it will help along the way as well , wish i knew this when i had started

Tier 1) L.Tr ( german )

Tier 2 ) M2 Light ( my favorite beast with the autoloader the pen on AP is a bite low but you can move ) BT-2 ,

Tier 3 ) M22 Locust ( premium tank that can be obtain for free : http://wotacademy.com/#/home )

tier 4 ) P26/40 ( italian with his last gun and HE )

Tier 5 ) O-i Exp , T67 , Kv-1

Tier 6 ) cromwell , T-34-85 , Hellcat , O-I , KV-2 , T-150 , KV-85

if you pick those tank you have high chance to get more WinRate if you play them well...

Pick a line or two (or three) that you want to pursue.   Stick to them.  Try to pick lights last, as they are requiring a bit of a different skill set.  Also, the team is more dependent on lights than any other class.  Anyways, once you hit tier 4 or so, keep the crew.  Keep training it into new tanks of same nation/type.

Suggested lines -

Russian medium thru the T34

Russian heavy thru the KV1

US medium thru the M4

These may be among the more noob friendly lines out there.

I remember back in the good old days when I thought 500k credits was a lot.

Personally, I’d recommend option 3, but only from tier 5+. For tier 1-4 it takes so little time to get through the line I’d recommend option 1, but use a small repair kit, medkit and fire extinguisher in every tank.

Fixed it for you....  #3 is good once you get to Tier4

This game isn't a rush game, you'll only be food for me and other players.

This game is instead a long game, you'll have a lot to learn and blitzing up the tiers is not recommended.  Tier 5 is a good settle in tier.  I'll add more to this post in a bit.

Tier 2 ideas are BT-2 and T-26, Tier 3 is M3 Stuart and the Pz 38 (t). Play a couple hundred games in each of these in my opinion. The British Tier 3 Stuart l-lV is also a beast. Sorry, I know their all in different lines...…...

personally  research everything on every tank you play, that being said get to tier 4/5 quickly and spend a long time there that's where you'll start to see how the game is actually played  below that it's more just press W and shoot

The only thing you need to worry about learning at tiers 1-3 is the controls.  Get familiar with driving, shooting and using repair kits and medkits.  Change out the reticles in the settings.  I'd suggest one with a penetration indicator.

Leave the 100% crew in the tier 1 and train concealment on everyone.  You lose way too much xp to bother retraining them for other tanks.  You won't be in those tanks long enough to recover the amount you lose retraining for silver until you get to tier 5.  You could retrain for gold, but if you are going to spend the gold, just get entirely new additional crews.

Don't use 50% crews ever.  Spend the silver for 75%.  Get a Toolbox.  You can move it from tank to tank for free.  Same for Binocs.  Improved ventilation is usually so cheap for low tier tanks that it is worth it.

Russian lines are great to learn on.  Go up the lines to both the T-34 and the KV-1.  Every tank in those lines is decent.  Stop there and play the T-34 and KV-1 until you have their crews working on the second skill and good equipment on both tanks.  Only then move up.   At that point, you will have a couple of decent crews and a good working knowledge of the game.

Return to the forums frequently and ask questions.

Never blame the game.  Just to get ahead of the most frequent complaints, yes you CAN pen every tank you face and no, they aren't using an invisible tank hack.  They just understand the vision mechanics better.

Don't power grind to the first Tier 10 you'll burn yourself out and not learn much on the way.

Take your time find what tank class's work for your play style.  Tier 5 is a good place to hang out and learn the game.

1. Play all your Tier 1 tank until you have them elited (unlocked everything). Your T1 tanks all have 100% crews so make sure you hold onto those if/when you sell the tank.

2. Save as many credits as you can in low tiers; don't buy/use consumables, equipment or premium ammunition. Watch for sales and buy stuff when it is cheap (i.e. the Batchat is the current 'On Track' tank so tanks in that line are discounted.) Stick with free crews until you get to Tier 4 or 5, you have the low tier tanks for only a short time and it's not worth it to spend on a better crew as a new player.

3. Try several Nations and several types of tanks, if you play against a tank that looks interesting, buy it and try it yourself (the best way to learn how to play against a certain tank is to play it yourself). Tanks and Nations start to show clear differences by Tier 5, so plan to spend a fair amount of time there to learn the game and learn the differences between Nations and tanks.

4. Don't be in a rush to get to higher tiers. Higher tiers aren't better, they're just different. This game is truly about the journey and not the destination.

5. Good Luck and Have Fun.

Tsavo is so right, don't just blindly rush up the tiers.   We have sooooo many players right now in upper tiers with almost no skill at all.   Take time to learn the tanks, learn the mechanics, you'll enjoy the game a whole lot more.
