GPU-Z 2.9.0 reports the my NVIDIA GTX 980TI is running at 100% during game play.  Is this normal?

HD maps and the latest client v1.0.1.1#878

Windowed at 2560x1361

Graphics = Ultra ---> next lower setting didn't make a difference

Display is ROG PG279Q @144mhz, G-sync enabled --> client shows grayed out default

NVIDIA graphics level is 398.11 ---> earlier version also ran the GPU at 100%

Check my signature for PC configuration.

Any suggestions?

Seems right, assuming your getting a high fps and aren't limiting it to something really low.  Most games will try to render as many frames as possible at all times.

FPS rate well above 120 but I'll check it again.  FPS varies by map.

That would be normal, as long as your fps isn't stuttering.

No stuttering that is noticeable.

well since you don't have your fps capped then yes it should be using the card 100%, how bout you try capping it to say 60 or 80 fps and see if it goes down

PlutoniumX,

I tried a few settings using the NVIDIA Inspector.  I can bring the GPU utilization down to 90% if I set the FPS cap at 75.  I might try some higher cap settings.  Thanks for the suggestion. I should be good to run at 100% as the GPU temp is around 71c.

Reduce your Mhz to 120 on the desktop, then the same in-game, then use v-sync to lock the frames at 120 in-game. This will reduce the load on the gpu because its not generating unused frames. 144Mhz will tax the F out of your gpu. I've got a 1080, the card is watercooled with a NZXT adapter, heatsinks on the RAM chips, and 144Mhz will heat that sucker up!  Locking it at 120Mhz drastically cools it down, down to 60c during gameplay, and it holds steady at 120 FPS. Turn off the track effects also.

Thanks for the tips Cmdr.....,

I'll try cutting the monitor back to 120 and same with adapter properties.  G-Sync should keep me locked in.  Most 1080s are rated at 180 watts and my 980ti is 250 watts so that might say sometime about the GPU temps and utilization. I don't know if I can get my 980ti down to 60c @120.  I want a 1080ti but the prices are sky high right now.YIKES.

Cmdr.....,

Turning off tracks cut my GPU temps to 64c (fan set manually to 100%) which is quite acceptable. GPU still at 100% @120 mhz. I would have to drop the FPS rate to < 100 MHz to get the GPU utilization down.

Don't worry about utilization. You actually want it to run full throttle during the game, but then throttle back in the garage, or on your desktop. I use the MSI Afterburner app to monitor mine, but I'm also using 2 monitors. One full screened for the game, the other with teamspeak and the MSI thing. So I can watch it as it happens in real time. Trying to put all that on one screen while playing will tax your gpu also. Try running your game in full screen mode instead of windowed and see what happens.

And yes, the market for 1080s is crazy. I only have mine because my sons buddy was shipping off to Japan and parted out his rig in a fire sale.

Cmdr...,

I use MSI Afterburner to control fan speed. I only set fan speed to 100% when playing WOT. I was using full screen mode but switched to windowed mode so that I could quickly switch to GPU-Z to see the temps and utilization.  In full screen mode, using the win key idles WOT when switching out of full screen mode.  So in full screen mode, tracks off running 120 MHz my GPU is 70c and 100% utilization.  Turning tracks back on and running ultra ups the GPU temps to 73c.  GPU temps seem to vary some by the map being played.
