With every patch which addresses the map deficiency, I make one of these posts to highlight where we stand in terms of the maps that are currently in the game, and those that are not.  I then maintain this post until the release of the next patch, at which point I'll start over.  In short, come here for all map news!

If I'm missing anything, or if you think anything is inaccurate, please let me know.  Thanks

General Map News

  • "Their plan is to bring back the majority of the old maps, in exception of ancient, perhaps rather problematic maps like Komarin. Working hours are estimated to be about 19 months per map, prototyping included. Making new maps from scratch like Minsk and Studzianki usually takes less time, as replicating an old map to HD per se can take up several months."  - Source:  Transcript of 22Aug18 Gamescom Q&A with Andrey Biletskiy. Link
  • "We have a large Asian audience. So we’ll undoubtedly bring the Asian themed maps back at some point.  The community seems to have the opinion that we need to do more symmetrical maps. After the exit of the map “Lost City” we will check this theory, and see if this is true.   We will consider the “Pearl River” map as a returning one. “Komarin”, which is known as a nightmare, will probably not. Having a sort of map of the day function is something we’re thinking of, where we can have a favorite pop up more and not-so-liked maps go by the wayside for a bit. You can also add a finger up / finger down (voting) for a map based on the result of the battle (where there is also a link to the results of the battle, the technique, etc.). If we did something like that, of course, you wouldn’t ever get the full map selection." - Source:  WG developer Q&A held at the Minsk Tanker’s Day event.  Link

Maps Not In Game

*Denotes what is essentially a duplicate of another map in terms of layout with only visual changes, which I think most will agree does not need to be returned.  Therefore, if excluding these 4, you could say 17 maps are missing.

New Maps in Development

Note that most of these were shown a long time ago, and there has been no update in quite some time.  The ones in bold have been discussed by WG in the past year.

Planned Returned Maps for 1.2

  • Ghost Town
  • Highway
  • Widepark

Planned New Maps for 1.2

  • Empire's Edge (aka Empire's Border, Great Wall)

Planned Revised Maps for 1.2

  • Fjords

Never seem to see most of the maps in game...always seems to be the same few...

I think there was a mod that counted which maps you played...I might look for that just in case I am seeing what I think I am seeing and not actually seeing whats there ;)

The map rotation is a known issue for sure.  Even if you play 50 battles during one session/login, you'll never see all 35 maps.  The Session Statistic mods, of which there are a few variations, will track your maps played.

It better not be available for high tiers as we don't need another Province disaster.

what are you talking about? province map its a disaster by itself, widepark allows flanking maneuvers instead of sniping and pinned positions from where you can barely move

From the video: "this map is aimed at making the gameplay at lower tiers more diverse"

... so I don't think it will be available for higher tiers.  Probably the same as before which was Tier 4, 5, 6 only.

That was a reference to the original province and its size.

Both the original province map, and widepark are too small for tier 7+, as after tier 6 the tanks you get are too fast, and have too much view range for the fights to be fun or fair.

The current size of province is the same as the old one but people are led to believe its bigger but that is only due to the skybox and external terrain outside the border.

Thanks for the post Moogleslam. Good work, but I want Northwest and Pearl River back in rotation, revised or not.

Out of all the maps I've seen and heard its safe to say that I see Dragon's Ridge and Northwest being requested the most. Pearl River is more of a close second to those two maps.

I thought as much, but never actually confirmed. *disdain intensifies*

Might want to put the two grand battles map under their own heading to notate the different mode.

I compared it with video and images of the old Province. Reason why people think its bigger is because WG added a skybox to it.

Now for the uninformed a Skybox is basically something existing outside the boundaries of the physical and playable area which give a sense of scale to make the map seem bigger.

I did a poll for this a while back, when we only had 9 maps removed, and at that point in time, the ranking of maps that players most wanted to see returned was:

  1. Pearl River
  2. Northwest
  3. Dragon Ridge
  4. Port
  5. South Coast
  6. Hidden Village
  7. Severogorsk
  8. Komarin

I left Province off this list since we got it back already, but it was tied with Severogorsk for 2nd last place.  So yeah, we got the second least desired map returned, but no sign of the maps that players most wanted to see returned.  I'll do another similar poll soon.

Thanks moogle.  A hand full of those maps in development look quite promising.  Particularly the Pacific Rim.  The bulk, are giving me that classic corridor impression due to the way they implement terrain now.  aka no climbing.  Others just don't appeal to me at all.  There has to be other games of this genre that have created historic maps.  Why not build off of that if those map designs are successful?
