^^^The artillery commander who acted without orders reminds me of those Union commanders at Gettysburg who saved the day at Little Round Top because they acted without orders.

What MacArthur and Kennedy detailed in their three talks was a grand strategy of the American Republic—a way of understanding not simply how the U.S. should fight, but when and where. So it is that “never get involved in a land war in Asia” is as indelibly tied to MacArthur as the term “military-industrial complex” is to Eisenhower.
