So I heard great things about the Matilda, but the three Mediums are anything but. Both the first two were easy-ish thanks to needing little EXP to grind past, but now the Medium III breaks my resolve with maybe 300 EXP gained per round. Is there anything I'm missing? And should I use the 6-pounder or not?

I would say there's nothing special about the 6-pounder, so save your XP.   Apparently I got through the Medium III without researching the second engine, but I don't know if that was a good idea or not.

The wiki says the armour is weak so you might try not closing to point blank.  Keep close to hard cover (buildings, rocks) that you can hide behind as needed.

Spoiler

Well, this was an oddly successful round.

The Med 3 is not that bad of a tank... All you need to do is take the quick firing 2pdr and put it in a nice place to snipe from. It has very good pen with regular ammo(64) and very high pen with premium rounds(121), also not to mention amazing gun handling with .34 dispersion and 1.59 aimtime. If you are serious about this thing then I would recommend using Vents + rammer + binocs. If not then just vents + binocs (if you have a pair seeing as you are quite new).

Being this new, it's a good time to learn a tough lesson.  All Tanks can be good in the right hands.  If a grind is feeling horrible, stop and ask yourself why?  It's most likely because you are struggling with a certain aspect of that vehicle and it's a perfect opportunity to focus on your improvement.  I've seen guys like LemmingRush and Taugrim take absolutely abysmal tanks and have massive games in them.  It's never the tank, always the driver.

If you learn this lesson early, you will be a much better tanker and enjoy the game more in the long run

Except for when they're stock, lmbo. But yeah, I generally know it's either my fault for being stupid or my team's for getting in my way when I try and take cover from enemy tanks.

Use the 75 Howitzer.  Fire all HE.  Yes, the 6-pounder has better pen and is more accurate.  In the Matilda, the 6-pounder is a murder machine because the Matilda has the armor to stay exposed and hose down opponents while bouncing most of the return fire.  The M2 is covered in tin cans.  You want to be exposed for as little time as possible in it.  Poke, shoot, scoot.  If the catapult that is a 75 howitzer was feeling generous, you will do massive damage.  If not, then the 4 second reload is almost done before the shell lands and you try again.
