Just as a footnote, this 3 Mark was done using the 122mm derp gun. So, any of the advice I give will be for using the 122mm gun.

So, what is a KV-1? Well, the KV-1 has been in the game from the very beginning, has seen its fair share of buffs and nerfs, and it still remains a fan-favorite…and usually the 1st heavy tank a new player gets. It leads to powerful Russian heavies like the almighty KV-2 and the fearsome IS tanks. For starters, here’s a list of pros and cons about this tank.

PROS:

--Has great, all-round armor, including an incredibly tough turret.

--Decent health pool.

--Excellent selection of guns (I will do this guide from the perspective of using the 122mm gun).

--Great sidescraper.

--The 122mm gun is a menace at top tier. Can easily one-shot some tanks.

CONS:

--Very slow and sluggish, easy artillery food.

--Has its fair share of frontal weakspots.

--Awful view range.

--Long aim time AND reload time on the 122mm gun. Can be highly inaccurate at times.

--HEAT shells are extremely expensive.

The KV-1 is relatively user-friendly, and usually quite forgiving of mistakes that the player makes. Thick armor, great guns, and a good health pool help newer players learn the basics of driving a heavy tank. At top tier, the KV-1 is a powerful heavy tank. When utilized correctly, it is capable of doing massive damage. And with the 122mm gun, you can revel in watching those sods in their T67s and Chaffees get wrecked in one hit with a full-pen HE shell. So, when top tier, the KV-1 can be loads of fun, is easy to play, and is a very tough heavy tank.

The KV-1 in tier 6 battles is a different beast. Your 122mm gun suddenly becomes less effective, and your armor starts looking to be not as thick as you thought. At this tier, you are mostly a support heavy. Your gun is easily capable of tracking and dealing out multiple servings of module damage, allowing your tougher allies to more easily kill off your enemies. Carefully measure up each encounter you get into while mid-tier, and NEVER travel alone. Stick close to your fellow heavy tanks. There is safety in numbers. As ever, your armor can get some bounces…and your turret remains a tough nut to crack.

When bottom tier, the KV-1 is even more locked into being a supporting heavy…and the 122mm gun starts to become more of a liability. However, thanks to having HEAT with 140mm of pen, you can penetrate some tier 7 heavies and most tier 7 mediums. However, DO NOT rely on your HEAT. It is very expensive. As always, HE will be a good option for supporting your allies. Track enemy vehicles, and back off to reload….and watch the assistance damage roll in like a pack of T-34s. Also, your armor at tier 7 is not sufficient for brawling. Be very careful with the shots you take, as tier 7 tanks can easily pen you almost anywhere.

In regards to modules, a Rammer and Gun Laying Drive are recommended, as it helps your 122mm gun aim quicker and fire faster. Use a Spall Liner as well…as it helps greatly with durability from artillery and higher tier derp guns. Should you want an even faster-firing gun, swap out the Liner for Vents….but I do not recommend this.

For ammunition, I load 35 HE and 15 HEAT. As for consumables, use the usual Repair Kit, Extinguisher, and First Aid.

As for crew skills, start out with Sixth Sense, Intuition, Controlled Impact, Deadeye, and Call for Vengeance. 2nd round of skills should include at least 1-2 crew with repairs. I would recommend the Loader and Radio Operator for Repairs. On your remaining crew, train Recon, Clutch Braking, and Snap Shot. For the 3rd round, train BiA on all crew. And should you get to the 4th set, wrap up Repairs on all crew and train Safe Stowage and Situational Awareness on the Loader and RO.

Finally, here are some replays and pointers.

http://wotreplays.eu...xmachine21-kv-1 (<- Playing the KV-1 when mid tier.)

--As always, stick with your fellow teamies. ONLY if you are top tier could you maybe go it alone.

--When bottom tier, don’t be too concerned with getting damage, as most of your HE shots against enemy heavy tanks will maybe do 100 damage, at best. Focus on tracking enemies for your allies.

--Finally, should you not like the 122mm gun, switch it out. The 57mm gun offers outstanding penetration and great RoF, and the 85mm gun offers great RoF with consistent damage. Both are good, even in tier 7.

So there you have it! Enjoy!

If you're running anything other than the 152 on a Kv-2, you're doing it wrong.

Wait, this isn't about the kv-2?

Yep. Nothing hyper impressive. Just using the 122mm on the KV-1.
