Hey all! A WWII scenario for your consideration.

Something I've been wondering about for quite some time: Assume you are in a flanking ambush position, good cover, maybe hull-down, facing a roadway perpendicular to it. A line of enemy vehicles comes along, a convoy of trucks, tanks, etc. This is a perfect chance to cause some mayhem! You commence firing at... which vehicle? The first or the last?

I've heard it both ways: the first, because then you force the convoy to halt in confusion and disarray. The last, because the other vehicles, especially those towards the front, may not even realize that the trailing vehicle was hit.

My strategy would be to go for the first, then the last. Should it be the other way around? Or another strategy entirely? Most importantly to me, which strategy were tankers actually taught to use? Did it vary by year and/or country?

I'd hazard a guess the lead first, trailing second, turkey shoot third.

First, last, and somewhere around the middle could cause a nice bit of chaos. :justwait:

Always last one first. Others may not notice so you can kill them all one by one.

I normally shoot at the first after a few of them are already the open, thus I have more accesible targets.

But I'm not sure in a real life situation, the last vehicle can be attacked without anyone noticing... that also depends in "with what" are you attacking, if it's an explosive so the truck or tank or whatever, explodes in 20 thousand pieces... I'd say it's better to attack the first vehicle in the column.

On the opposite side, if you are using a sniper rifle with a silencer... well, it would be better to attack the last one.

Depends on the size of the target and your mission objective. Generically, the usual tactic is to shoot first and last vehicle within your designated kill zone. In the real world, tanks do not operate without “wingmen”. The easiest way to break up a multiple target engagement is to have outside two tanks work inward to center, with others working within their arcs or from center outward.

The advantage to shooting the last tank is lost once you've shot the first.

Either way the choice of the second target is easy, after the first shot you target the most dangerous tank that's shooting back at you.

"Real world" and "modern day" is definitely a different story - much easier to notice if your trailing vehicle has been hit, much easier to spot enemies, and modernized formations. I'm mostly talking about a WWII scenario that was, I think, seen fairly often - an ambush position against a one-vehicle-wide line formation, traveling along a road or plain.

TBH I really am mostly interested in what was standard doctrine, what tankers learned to do at the time.

If your aim is to disrupt the convoy or destroy it, pick off the lead one first.  Brings the convoy to a halt and/or causes some disruption.  (second to pick off is the last one, both this and lead will block the road from others escaping).

If your aim is simply to pick off a truck, and not engage the entire convoy, then your target is the tail end charlie..

Yes. Assuming that I am a single vehicle (or at least fewer vehicles) facing a large convoy, I want to maximize my effect.

Stopping the other team from getting to the spots they want to get to right at the start of the match will have much more impact on the game as a whole than will picking off one tank.

If you have support, and will not be spotted, the last.

If you are by yourself, and in danger of getting dead in a hurry, the last tank you can afford to shoot without getting dead.

If possible, wait for the enemy column to enter some sort of a defile.

You always shoot the first vehicle to stop the column, and simultaneously the last to prevent the column from a retrograde.

Your friendly tanks then work from opposing ends toward the center until the threat is eliminated.

First. This causes the column to stop. Then shoot the last one. This prevents them from backing up. Then the ones in the middle have nowhere to go. Michael Wittman did this against the British.

Depends on the goal of the mission, whether you're defending an area on on the hunt.

If you're defending (which means you're going to want to slow the advance of the column), then the lead is where you want to start.

If you're hunting, it also kinda depends on what you're hunting for.  If maximum disruption to the enemy with minimal effort is your goal, then the most valuable target would be the one carrying fuel for the convoy...and then perhaps their highest value armored asset.

Depends a lot on what you're ambushing with.
If you've got a lot of firepower, I'd say hit the front first to slow the convoy down a bit, then the last. Make them feel trapped and pick them off in the chaos.

If you've only got one shot at it, and you want to do the most damage, hit the last and scoot for the best chance at survival.
