All the bands from that era had standouts that gave them their distinctive sound. For some bands though the members were all merely good the orchestration made the difference.

The Who were very good at this and this is a classic example. Nothing about the song really stands out but taken as a whole it has a sound you can listen over and over again.

That Who stuff from the 80's is very good. Their sound was definitely maturing by that time and Pete Townshend's songwriting was becoming increasingly autobiographical, as in these two great cuts from Face Dances...

We can all remember playing the recorder at some point or other during our elementary school years. Here's one very talented young woman who never stopped playing it.

Not to be disrespectful but maybe there is confusion between what is "orchestration", and the whole sound that is integral to a band's music.  Too many people call orchestration filler sound that hides a band's true talents.  Maybe we're just talking semantics.

And Emminence Front, is certainly not indicative of the band's 'sound'.

Here's something to offer.  And another.   And another.   "Orchestration"...yeah that's it.  Nothing great about any of their individual playing here.

So I went to an old dive bar last night...one of the few that still survive from the days of my youth.  So much to my wonderment, some of these songs still survive, out there in the dark corners of La La land...
