I want to get a good tank to get to know the basics in. I tried the KV-1, but I don't like the heavy playstyle. I want something quick, stealthy, and with decent view range. I'm going for the M8A1, but if anyone else has another suggestion, I'm good with it.

Quick, stealthy, and decent view range?   For a newbie understanding those doesn't come easy.   If you do go M8A1, you'll have camo and 6th sense plus gun enhancing equipment and a rammer.   It's a shoot n scoot and somewhat mobile series of TDs.

Also, it's generally advised to at least get a grasp of heavies (the easiest of the tank classes)  first and then expand into TDs or Meds with lights being the hardest to do well in.   Arty is there but is caveman simple.   Though there are some really good arty players who make them work really well.

The M4 Sherman or T-34 will do you well. Spend a LOT of time with them. If you're smart you will learn quite a bit after several hundred games. (Seriously.)

Any tier 8 premium. Make the most impact on the game, with the least amount of time played... :great:

While a tier 8 premium would support the game, with his current game knowledge, he'd be setting himself up for a frustrating experience most likely.   Probably best if he holds off a purchase until he's more comfortable.

IS-6

and don't fire too much premium rounds

or alternatively,

FV4202 or Strv S1

start from tier 1 is boring

You cant go wrong with Soviet mediums. When you get to midtiers the T34 and T34-85 have good qualities and they will lead to some of the 2 best mediums at tier 9.

Are you paying-to-win or free-to-play?

Watch quickybaby's youtube video on that.

Basically you get a referral or bonus code to get a tier 5 premium tank. Then go from there.

View range is big in this game.

It doesn't get much more basic than the KV-1 *whispers* "japanese heavies"

The PZ1C and Luchs are the way to go. They're the German tier 3 and 4 light tanks that are quick, stealthy, with decent view range and feature amusingly effective auto-loaders. The Luchs has massive carry potential but you won't drastically hurt the team's ability to win the game if you suck because its tier 4. At tier 5 I recommend the American T67 TD or the American Chaffee light tank.

Additionally at tier 5 the Russian T-34, Chinese Type T-34, and Italian P.43 are quick with decent view range but in place of stealth they offer the ability to sidescrape and thereby block damage from most same tier and lower tanks and some tier 6 tanks.

Otherwise, as usual, Tsavo's advice is golden and shouldn't be ignored.

Really, try to learn the game before you buy tier 8 premiums and set yourself (and your unlucky teammates) up for failure. Don't be "that guy" who is in a top tier tier 8 and does zero damage while not knowing how to play it.

Oh, no need to worry. I'm free-to-play for now, so no tier-8 premiums for me yet.

Go for the Obj 430.  Best medium in the game at the moment and a very good medium line.

If you don't like the KV-1 my vote is the T-34 (with 57mm gun)

The best tank to start out with, IMO, is the Cruiser II because it works reasonably well, is simple to use, and it has a good top gun - it works basically the same as a TD but without any of the problems.  At T2, it is the easiest place to start.  Now, the tank after it is rubbish, but 4-5K XP on a fun little T2 to fully max out is not so bad, IMO.

Other fun starting tanks:
SPGs:
T18 - This was a TD that they made into a SPG.  It has tank armor and can bounce 50 cal clips, causing much angst for most t2-T3 lights.
Birch gun - SPG with a turret.  Great because your camo never drops and it's fast enough to relocate easily.  This eventually leads to the best SPG in the game, the Bishop.  Some people used to say the FV-304 was better, but they have the same gun and 1 level lower MM means you are much better vs opponents.   love my Bert, but it's just not as good as a Bishop after the nerfs.
Most of the high-end SPGs simply suck after the nerf.  It's much more fun vs low tier tanks.

TDs: The three best lines here are the German ( Hetzer/Stug ), the Russians ( SU line ), and Swedish.  The first two are about tied.  Is your play style high tier or low? Low - German, High - Russian.  The Swedish are a tough TOUGH grind, but the payoff is huge in the end if you like a dedicated sniper.  The IKV 65 is amazing in that it has a medium tank shell velocity and hits like your typical large derp gun.  Going from lobbing basketballs to this was amazing.  The grind to it - not so much.

Lights - the game is made of lights now - almost all of the are fine, but the French autoloaders are lots of fun.
Mediums - hardly any reason to play these, IMO, as they are outclassed by heavies and lights and go-karts(wheeled aberrations) circle-strafe you to death.
Heavies - Many choices.  The consensus seems to be Russian, U.S, and Japanese in about that order, with some interesting outliers among the Chinese, Italian, and U.K.  German Mediums and Heavies have suffered from immense power creep and are not recommended.
