I present you: Unimog.

Posted Image

Unimog is Mercedes' civilian / military utility off-road truck.

It doesn't look like much, does it. I'll be the first to admit that humvee's look cooler. About 20% cooler to be precise.

But who needs looks when you can do THIS:

Or this:

It even sounds great.

When you absolutely HAVE to go somewhere where a freaking TANK can't go, accept no substitute. Unimog.

you try to compare a unimog (which you are right, is a fantastic vehicle) to a Humvee by posting videos of highly customized chassis offroading. well except the last video but that was nothing fancy. just go to youtube and put in Humvee offroading and you will get plenty of videos of Humvee that have either no modification of very slight modification doing things very similar.

again not taking anything away from the unimog, it provides a chassis that is very capable and can be customized for whatever you want it to do, but if you are trying to make a direct comparison find videos of actual unimogs setup for daily use like the last video and post them.

bushmaster is also pretty impressive because it does amazing things in its stock configuration

I'd take an Oshkosh M-ATV instead.

Cheezy video warning:

I prefer a nice mix of all terrain capabilities and protection. Stripping a vehicle down to the frame and off rock crawling in it isn't that impressive.

The unimog has the tendency to lie on its side a lot of the time.
I have seen quite a few doing that on NZ roads

hey lads, this looks like a nice little thread, I do have to put my hand in this one tho'. as someone that's driven in my time several Mogs, land-rovers and other Australian military vehicles in my time. I have to say that while a moggy is a decent piece of kit, there is a reason we are replacing them in the ADF. they just don't cut it any more. that's why over the next few years we will be replacing them with copperheads and dual cab bushmasters in combat roles, and medium unarmoured vehicles for non-combat service.

@ will_of_iron and wontendwell. sorry guys, MATV's and your MRAP's they're good, they save lives and they do a good job. they just don't do it as well as a bushmaster does it. and I will tell you all something here, the only reason both the UK and the US did not chose a Bushmaster as their MRAP choice was that there was so much back room policy and deals done and that Thales has French roots, there was never a chance for this vehicle to get a look in. no soldier has ever died in a Bushmaster vehicle, that's a fact, and it's a shame that US and UK troops die in lesser vehicles. UK and US servicemen I personally know have told me previously how much they envy our bushmasters. and considering the Hawkei L-JTV is the only vehicle that has been able to maintain the original requirements for the J-LTV program before it was cancelled, just goes to show what a solid FOV's they are in my opinion.

Meh.  Impressive, but I'll take a D11T ftw.

Who needs to go over the mountains when I can move it out of my way?  And thats a fullsize crew cab 3/4 ton next to it BTW.

You'd need an Earth Mover, Dump truck, a shitload of dynamite and that Chevy is not that impressive sport.

i think the truck part was a size comparison to the D11T (which is huge)
Well i cant wait to see wht the next US JLTV is. the concepts are alkl pretty good.

Wasn't talking about the Chevy, Sport.  I was talking about that large yellow thing behind it.  And I don't need anything but an 11T to move a mountain.  I can push, rip, crush, climb, or otherwise dismantle just about anything.  135 tons, a hell of a lot more HP than the listed 900, and almost enough torque to reverse the earths rotation ensures that.

Also, that D11T isn't a normal D11T.  You'll have to trust me on that.

I watched every video and I still say there's nothing that shows that the Unimog even has shit on the Humvee as it can do everything in those videos, And sure as hell wouldn't go toe to toe with the latest JLTV's and MRV's being made.

I raise your Humvee with my Tracker!

Ive thought about importing a Uni to the states, but the price tag kinda offsets it for now. Nice thing about Unis is they have Portal axels stock and theyre quite durable,if twitchy.

EDIT
But that old Humvee thats for sale a couple states over is mighty tempting....
