I just unlocked and bought the ST-I tier 9 USSR heavy tank. And when I look at it's research tree, I see a disaster:

Spoiler

What I see is the same awful gun that tier 7s have and it's not great even at that tier. 175/217 mm pen isn't going to cut it even with full premium ammo loadout. Basically, this tank is unplayable until at least the second gun is unlocked, which it shares with IS-3. 225 / 265 is not great for a tier 9 heavy either, but it's workable. So, it's either play IS-3 first (which is in an entirely different line), or pay 44 000 free XP, or you can't play this tank?

Or am I wrong?

You definitely need the BL-9 at a minimum to play...but I always use free XP to blow through modules.

If only I had it in the insane quantities required for high tier modules. But yeah, I get it, don't come back until you grind free XP.

It is interpreted as lS3 first. Very necessary.

It is a good idea to plan your tech tree progress before hand

STl has bad performance even with middle BL9 122. Compared to T10. Just free exp to the M62 122

I take it you didn't notice that the IS-4 uses the same gun too....at least when stock. It can then be upgraded to a Tier 10 gun, but comes stock with that Tier 8 gun.

Not sure why WG actually gives players the option of using the two different guns on the IS-4. In order to even reach the IS-4, both guns wind up being researched. It may be a remnant of the high-tier Russian tank shuffle from a few years ago, but, still quite odd.

However, something I've been doing now is taking a look at the upgraded equipment on some tanks that I'm grinding to. I'll look at which other tanks they may also be on. If that equipment is part of a "stock" tank, I might not waste researching it if I'm going to unlock the tank it's stock on anyway. It just really depends on which path I'm more interested in grinding at the moment.

I get you, but I was never interested in IS-3, grinding a whole line just for a module, even expensive one, is such an overkill (esp. since I'm a bad player and grinding takes so long). If I could, I would unlock IS-3 now and play / grind it in FL, but the grind to it through T-150 and especially IS is not something I can manage quickly.

So we have an instance where you see what you want, can't get what you want without effort but want it made available to you.

sooo ok

Ehm. No.

We have an instance of a stock tank not just being sup-par like it's expected to be and normally is, but instead being outright unplayable. I was just checking that I didn't miss anything.

Haha, the thought had crossed my mind. Imagine how triggered my teammates would be!

It's playable, since it's playable then the question becomes is it competitive or fun.  Now I'm tempted to try a few rounds with the stock gun, it can't be that bad can it..................

I wouldn't even want to brawl with tier 8 heavies with 217mm of APCR pen. Doable I suppose but definitely not ideal
