Is it wiser to use your accumulated free experience to research modules on new tanks earned, or to hoard them to someday be able to buy that high tier tank down the road? I only have 70K free experience now, and I treat them like gold.

Grinding most tanks stock sucks.  Get modules.

Try to never use them to research a tank, save them to research modules on new tanks. I haven't played a stock tank in years and never intend to again. Stock tanks are too miserable to play.

There have been a few times when I've had a lot that I've used it to finish a bad low tier tank but rarely.

As yankee mentioned, getting 6th is another option.

It's ok to use free exp on parts but don't use it to unlock a new tank

I just researched the Panther 2 and the T43, and now need lots of modules. Thank you for the advice. Much appreciated.

With a few exceptions, I don't have any issue playing stock tanks so I save them and use them to skip mid-high tier tanks that look like they'd be nothing more than a grind. Grinding through modules isn't anywhere near as tedious as grinding through a tank that is still crap even after the modules are all researched.

But that's me, you're likely to get a different answer from everyone...

OP, my suggestion is to use your Free XP to unlock modules and occasionally skills/perks.

But, before you go a psycho and unlock all the modules, look at them first. Depending on the type of tank, you might not need every top module. I look at them in this order:

  • Suspension - in many cases, the top suspension is needed in order to support the other modules and equipment
  • Turret (if applicable) - almost always the strongest, but make sure you compare them (on the M4A3E2 Jumbo the smaller turret is stronger but also has less traverse and view range)
  • Gun - these you will have to compare to find out which best suits you. Sometimes, the biggest gun isn't always the best choice
  • Engine - you may want to bump this up over the gun and possibly turret if you're dealing with Lights, but, in general, can wait. And, in some cases, you might not even want to spend the Free XP on them
  • Radio - this is totally up to you. If you're playing Lights or SPGs, you might want an upgrade or two as you'll sometimes be at the extremes of the team's push. But, that depends on you

As for using it on skills/perks, I wait until the training discounts and will use it to bump them up if it's less than 20k. Mind you, I have around a million Free XP, so it's not going to hurt me too much.

Well recently I finished the grind on the Indien and TVP.  And now I'm working on the AMX 65t.

So my answer is modules, but some folks use it to bypass certain clinker/xp sink tanks.

I'd use it to skip to tiers 6 or 8 so you can grind them in Strongholds

Most recommend saving it for modules, so you don't have to play a stock tank.

But I also hate playing low tier.

I usually free xp my way up to Tier 6 - 8, so I don't have to deal with terrible tanks and lower tiers.

I think it depends on what line you're going for and how much modules cost.

For instance, I used free xp to get to the Caernarvon and unlocked modules, and then grinded that tank to get the Conqueror.  Since I have a lot of gold from the holiday boxes, I've been waiting for free xp conversion specials and continuing to play the Caernarvon to get enough exp to unlock the modules of the Conqueror before I start playing it.  Otherwise, getting the tracks, turret, and gun costs about 100k of exp.

Modules, always modules.

Never use Free XP to unlock a tank, then you just end up with a stock tank and no Free XP, and playing a stock tank is for suckers. Save that Free XP so that you can unlock as many modules as possible on any tank you buy. That becomes even more important at higher tiers, when there are lots of good players with crew skills, and stock tanks are basically just asking people to wreck you.

When I didn't have a lot of Free XP I would usually save it to unlock and buy tanks when they were on sale (like the On Track Events).

I did save up 200k free XP to skip the tier 8 Czech tank COMPLETELY.

Now that I am back up to 200k Free XP I use it for the modules on new tanks like others have said.  I only unlock the necessary ones (maybe the top gun isn't 50k XP better than the mid gun)

I RARELY use Free XP on Crew Skills.  And then usually when it is 10:1

I've only just started doing any Free XP use and that was only  because I won and was gifted something like 17,000 Gold from Thanksgiving to mid January during the Holiday Events in that time.

I would ONLY use the Free XP to Research Modules on a New Tank that is already Unlocked.  There's nothing wrong with grinding your way through the tank, but the more efficient truth is:  Unlock the modules, play the tank fully researched, or as close to it as you can 'afford' with your Free XP, then grind the XP necessary to unlock the next Tank(s) up the line from there.  Use any accumulated Free XP to unlock more modules once that is done.  Seems like a less painful overall way to go.

I played a long time with stock tanks, not updating them until I had enough research XP.  It's a tough road to travel and if you don't have to by using free xp on modules, then I suggest doing it.
