Can someone explain the reasoning behind the so-called "top guns" of the French M4 51 and M4 54?  The ones with better alpha and worse stats in every other way?  The ones that would require 128,000 XP to unlock?  Besides being worse in literally EVERY other category the only noteworthy difference seems to be that they fire AP as premium ammo and not APCR.  I've seen some idiotic stuff from Wargaming - like 400+ kg. radios on Japanese medium tanks - but this just takes the cake.

Try them. They don't look good on paper, but that kinda alpha on a quite heavy+mobile tank with very good gun handling will let you snapshot trade with other heavies pretty well. If the tier 10 didn't have the horrible cupola, it could even be competitive. The tier 9 is better with the smaller gun though.

And if you are gonna play dpm pewpew with 120mm gun, might as well play the Super Conq.

I Like the idea of 2 guns that can have 2 different play styles . But if you have to research them then that's not cool but I think you can skip the top gun so just do that if don't want the alpha gun.

For the 65T, I often PM players and tell them to consider that the top turret has worse armor and larger cupola to target. I also tell them that the top gun is unnecessary because it has a lower pen (worse against higher tiers) and it requires you to grind a ton of XP for something that is not required to reach the next tank. Too many people auto-purchase modules without fully understanding what they are getting.

The bigger gun is a trap for fools to waste free XP on and for obsessive compulsive players to drag out their grind a few dozen more battles.

for the 65t on paper it might be better to use stock turret and the 100, but in reality top gun is far better due to the 33% extra alpha. The slow nature of the amx65t mean that it has difficulty exploiting the higher dpm of the 100mm gun. Also, the top turret has those cupolas that cannot be easily penned but the enemy keep shooting at them carelessly. When using the  stock turret i get penned in the cupola all the time, especially by low tier AP shells like the 175 pen 122mm guns.

I feel more comfortable with the 120 on the m4 51 (higher gold pen) but the 127 is more fun. (also allows me to easily pen the strv 103-0)
