i was thinking about this earlier.players who are really good are more likely "chess"-type players. players like me are more like "checkers"-type players.

chess-types know from when they spawn...what to do,where to go,who they might face, all the tanks strengths/weaknesses.in a developing situation, they can make split-second decisions, and also know the follow-on sequences FROM those decisions.they can think 5-6 "moves" ahead.they are "proactive".they even know a redteam players moves 5-6 moves ahead.

checkers-types know that they spawn.then they go "somewhere",do "something" and hope it works out.they see a checker that they can jump...they do it.once in a while the redteam checkers align and a double- or triple-jump happens. checkers-types are more "reactive".. no thinking 6 moves ahead, just always reacting to what they find.

"chess" types also play "moves" outside the actual games.they study...read articles, watch videos, set up training rooms, etc.these are all "moves" for their overall game.

"checkers" may watch a vid here or there, watch a stream, read a bit...but not as much to absorb stuff as "chess" players will.

i realize i am a "checkers" guy. i am too lazy to really study...seems like work.in matches,i am too impatient to think "proactively". if i pick up things by playing, well even a broken clock can be right twice a day.and in real life , i could NEVER play chess against anyone who was over 10 years old.i just dont have that "deepthought".this is why i am playing more and more down in tiers 4-6. i had tried moving up to 6-8,but its way too much for me.playing well in tiers 9 and 10 seems to require more "chess" nature and less "checkers" kneejerk. of course, many play those tiers like checkers but they are the ones that are always being complained about.

and this also brings up tic-tac-toe. there are many of these players out there, but " the only winning move is not to play".

just some early morning thought before coffee...which may explain a lot!

PS- some of the "best of the best" are tri-dimensional chess players!

That's not exactly true.  At one point, I thought I was an "incredible" player because I played mostly solo and would finish towards the top in Ranked Battles.  Then I joined Y0L0 and realized no matter how good I could get, I would always be playing checkers.  People like O_P_Hacker, Kabali, Boom, etc. take the game to another "chess like" level.  I've been humble ever since.

If Chess had 25% RNG such that the Knight could randomly miss his landing square or the Queen could randomly fail to take a pawn and bounce back to an adjacent square, then it might be an apt comparison. Actually not even checkers features random results. Or Tic Tac Toe. No, this game is more like crouquet  anything with dice. What was the question ?

I'd say that's a pretty good analogy. I like your explanation of being 'proactive' vs just doing 'something'. I feel I can relate on both fronts as I'm also an avid chess player.

Oooohhh, and think of how much fun the forum would be!

"The Queen is OP."

"Pawns suck until you fully upgrade them."

"Rooks need to be nerfed, bishops buffed."

"It's not fair that I should have to play against Garry Kasparov!  SBMM NOW!!!!!"

"You can't win the game unless you pay for non-plastic pieces."

"Knights are sky-cancer and should be removed from the game since you can't block them."

"RNGeezus hates my king, he never pens ANYTHING!"

edited to fix name spelling

If some of these guys think they are just checkers players, I'd better go re-read the rule book and practice some more.  I haven't even figured out how all chess pieces move!

From your response, you don't know squat about chess players.

Chess players vary in their outlook and personalities and likes.  Many of the better chess players have navigated to Hold em.  I did the same. Dan "Action" Harrington is a good example (State of MA Master), Karl Schofstoll is another.

What it's distilled down to "see red thing, shoot red thing, repeat until either party dies"?

I've no idea how I got where I am stat-wise,  I take turbo risks to try to turn games and shoot more reds.
