Actually, Hitler effed up. Granted he did that a lot and was evil to boot, but this one was arguably important. Hitler declared war on America after America declared war on Japan for bombing Pearl Harbor. The reasons Hitler did that were to support his Axis partner as well as to try to get Japanese support for Hitler's war against Russia. In the event the Japanese, having butted heads with Russia in previous wars, decided that butting heads with Russia again was not in their best interest. They stayed neutral with respect to Russia, thus allowing Stalin to move significant forces from the eastern side of Russia to counter the German forces attacking him in the west.

However, with Hitler having declared war on America, then we didn't have to declare war on him to get officially involved. If Hitler had not declared war on us, we would have had to declare war on him. While that would probably have happened, it would not have been a sure thing and could have ended up being delayed for a while with at least some members of Congress not being that thrilled with declaring war on a nation that hadn't actually attacked us at that point. Thus Hitler might have ended up with a little more breathing room. How much of a difference would that have made in the outcome of the war? Hard to say, but the longer it took us to declare war on Germany with Germany remaining more or less neutral with respect to America would have worked in Germany's favor in the short run.

Why back when, I read a book about this written by a couple of the members involved with Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor.  To cut it extremely short, they were confident that they would declare war on Germany but Hitler doing so made it very easy on them.  They knew Japan was a sideshow and Germany the real threat and had to take most of the effort and many high level military and political figures knew this as well and were onboard.  To declare war on Germany would have had an outcry by the public that it was a Japanese that attacked us and wth are you doing?!  Still, they were confident they would be able to pull it off.

So, likely, not much would have changed.
