so in the res folder I cant remember the exact folder but in it the auf panther and some other odd model folders are kept there. I have tried to swap the full model with another panther tank cause of the similarity in the designs but get the game crash when go to view it in garage.  I switched over the skins only and they worked on the tank was trying to modify.

........

would appreciate an explanation of how to get this to work. when I get back in the game files again, I will type out the file path up here.

......

there is about 7 other vehicles more or less in the same folder

..............

the auf panther folder looks complete with all the models and textures

Swapping parts of tanks can be a pain.
Here is a list of all the files associated with that tank:

Spoiler

None of the tanks parts are in a vehicle pkg file..
only

shared_content-part1.pkg
shared_content-part2.pkg

shared_content_hd are textures only.

GUI are images
Scripts are XML and Python scripts.

You should probably look at this thread here:

the models are complete. I was able to transfer all models including the turret, hull and gun. the problem I keep having with a lot of model modding is the chassis and if the hull matches to the chassis.

......

this is about on most models I have worked with. I don't know what the limitations are on the hull and chassis modding. perhaps someone can enlighten me. I was able to complete this mod but I am interested in doing entire model swaps of other tanks

The rubber band chassis/tracks only show up very with low settings or from very far away LOD. These models are the ones inside the primitives_processed for that chassis.
The real tracks are built from individual track section models.

The tanks XML file in scripts/item_defs is going to create the physical tracks based on what info is in that file.

You can't swap that file but you can edit it usually. Some times with some tanks, the game crashes just extracting the item_defs file.
In side that XML you will find sections on what model(s) is used for the physical tracks, how they are built (count and spacing) and other info.
You could try extracting that XML and editing the sections I mentioned above. Maybe copy and past from the tank you are replacing with's item_defs XML file.
