IDK if Gameplay discussion is the place for this, but whatever.

There was a decent amount of concern earlier that the IS-2-II [upcoming tier 8 double barreled heavy] was going to get straddled with the worst stock configuration of any vehicle in the entire tier.[like, nothing else came close]. Originally it was going to be stuck with 85mm guns with 120 base pen and 161 premium pen.

Well, for those of you who were trying to hoard free XP to skip what would have been a literally unplayable setup, good news! The test version of 1.7.1 is up on gamemodels3d and now those 85mm guns are magical and have 212 base pen and 238 premium pen [and 180 damage instead of 160].

Is that particularly good for a tier 8 heavy? No, but at least its not unplayable. 120mm of pen would have a hard time against tier 6 mediums...

Also worth noting that the 100mm version of the Object 703-II got the price of its shells slightly adjusted, so it will probably be released with 1.7.1. This keeps the 122mm version a Lootbox exclusive, which is "fine" since the 100mm version actually looks quite a bit better. That could be a good thing or a bad thing... maybe actually a bad thing come to think of it...

Traditionally the absurdly easy classes in games require the greatest time sink as an offset. I am nonplussed why Wargaming would make a 2 gun heavy tank easy and quick to unlock.  I have disabused myself of the notion that other players weigh concepts of balance and fairplay, however.  Wargaming certainly has showcased the stupidly easy and powerful 430 to 430u grind by making that require almost no time or pain, they are aware of it, and have made zero effort at balancing it when compared to nonrussian alternatives.

The biggest hurdle to the DB line looks like having to go through the KV-3. It was kind of a bad tank when it first got thrown into tier 7 like... 6 or 7 years ago, and the powercreep over the years hasn't exactly done it any favors.

But nobody really expected a Russian line of tanks to be useless so while this is good news for those excited about this line, I'm not one of them, it's mostly business as usual isn't it

I like the Kv-3, it's the Kv-4 that I found horrid. Still not sure why they branched it off that and not the IS other than because it already has two tanks off it.

Considering playstyle, the IS-M should have branched off the KV-3 rather than the IS.  Typical WG not thinking ahead...

Can't have an unplayable stock grind on a Soviet tank, Comrade!

The original plan was absurd, considering it would be literally unplayable at Tier VIII With that kind of pen and it would be nothing but a Free XP Sink. However, it is equally absurd to just replace the guns entirely with fictional stats when other tanks have those kinda grinds and suffer for them. The best balance would have been to keep the guns but to put a double version of the 100mm D-10T In the middle, this way you do actually have a somewhat competitive "stock" gun as having played through the KV-3 You should have that gun. Hell I could even support a double 122mm D-25T In the middle even if the top gun goes back down to 100mm.

The KV-3 definitely isn't what I remember it.  But the grind through it (or any tank) isn't like it used to be folks.  x3 prem bonuses and boosters make grinding quicker.  Throw in events, the current extended tank bonuses, the occasional x5s.  And those x5s are pretty much monthly now if you claim the Twitch packages.  Grinding is a lot easier and quicker.

Do we know the xp amount needed?  I think (and hope) I over-padded mine heavily at 110kish.  But it wasn't that hard to get there as I ran some of the Twitch x5s during an xN weekend with boosters and prem bonuses and the daily.

I found the 703 mechanic unnatural myself.  The documentation led me to believe it was something you turned on to activate and then fired the double barrel shot.  I wasted double shots into allies I was cornering past twice before I figured out it was like lighting a time delay fuse on a 19th century canon.  Someone that practices enough to make it work might make it interesting but it just seemed clumsy to me on a tank with already substellar handling.

In comparison the Italian Reloading mechanic came perfectly natural and the flexibility to single fire normally OR drop multiple shots ina moment of opportunity or need is brilliant.

Indeed. I sold mine a LONG time ago and never looked back. Recently bought back and put a 100% BIA crew in it for the upcoming tech tree line and remember why it didn't stay in my garage.

Double barrel 85 mm with full HE mode. Sounds fun.

That is a misleading example.

The 430 used to be a Tier X, meaning that it had no researchable components. When it was moved to tier IX, WG did not model a new turret or guns for it.

And yet when they moved the t30 from tier 10 to tier 9 they nerfed the ever loving frak out of it and added in new stock grind guns and the rest. The 430 was basically unchanged past redoing the health and other minor tweaks to fit in at tier 9.

Wait, people are actually grinding for the double barrels? And here I am sitting on 120 Russian national prints so I can instantly grab the tier10.

I have a ton too, but I'm hoarding them until I'm forced to grind through something truly unbearable. Still not sure when; I have a crapload for every nation now.

I guess +1 for Russian bias? ;-)

Thanks for the update, relieved that the stock grind won't be that unbearable. I know other tanks have to deal with it, and this might be russian bias, but honestly I just feel like nobody should have to suffer with unplayable modules.
