So I got my KV-1 and have unlocked both the 122mm and 85mm. Since I plan on spending time learning heavies with this tank, which gun is better for learning? Is one a better choice than the other. Have the 85mm equipped, but am I doing this wrong? Any help is appreciated.

The best gun on the KV-1 in my personal opinion is the 85mm F-30 (The gun you currently have on yours).

Each one supports a different play style. Do you know what you want to accomplish with it? I've used each one at different times. The 57mm can surprise enemies due to the crazy dpm it pumps out. The derp can put serious hurt on people, if you can get help covering your reload. Just depends on what you want more than anything!

I preferred the 57mm as I could disable the tracks as fast as they could repair them.. and keep them immobile until they were destroyed by others

really useful on TDs with no turret.

I have 2623 games with a 56% win rate using 85 mm. It is a good general purpose gun as you don't know what MM will give you as opponents. Once you have some decent crew skills you can play with 57/122 but I find best overall results with 85.

The 85 is good, I use it now. When I first got the KV-1 I preferred the derp 122. What I would do is try all 3 for 10 games or so and see what you prefer. Don’t be surprised if it changes after a while - eventually I didn’t like the long reload of the derp since the 85 has a quick reload for good damage and I started to learn how to get around the feeling of not being able to penetrate things

That tank is unusual in that it has 3 viable guns.

  • The 85mm is what I would recommend to use in order to learn how to play heavy tanks. It has good damage, a decent rate of fire, and good penetration. It's a good all-rounder. Use this gun for normal heavy tank playing...using cover, sidescraping, etc.
  • The 57mm is the same gun as on the T-34. It has great penetration and rate of fire. It is very effective, but has low damage per shot, so you have to expose yourself a lot. It's good if you like brawling in your heavy tanks.
  • The 122mm is what I 3-marked the KV-1 in. If you have a large supply of credits, you can spam HEAT rounds with this and tear through the enemy team at 300 damage per shot at tier 5. You have to get up and close and know when to push. It's a lot of fun, but I wouldn't recommend learning the tank with it, unless you love howitzers ('derp guns';) and are familiar with their playstyle. After the KV-1, only the KV-1S and KV-2 have a similar playstyle to the KV-1 with 122mm.

This is really good advice for all 3 guns.

In pub matches, I prefer the 122mm because I don't like to expose my hull for too long.  In competitive play, I use the 57mm because I am incredibly effective in it and can kill any KV-1 with my DPM, even one with the same gun.  In truth, you can't go wrong with any of them and you just have to figure out your preferred playstyle.

Best of luck.

I loved using the derp, but would get my butt handed to me while waiting for it to reload. (My own fault for being too far forward or putting myself in danger). The 85 is good for damage and what I mainly use. The 57 was disappointing in the DPM range for me, but I may go back to it. Just play with all 3 and figure out what kind of gameplay you're good at.

I liked the 57. It loses a little pen to the 85, but has a withering rate of fire in comparison.

All said about viability is true but it is hard to not give the nod to the 85. The gun is an excellent mix of alpha and pen. I would recommend it as the go too gun for most your grind.

All three are viable as other have said, but each presents a different play-style.  IMO, it's best to go with the 85, as the play style with it is closest to the classic "Russian Heavy" play style that you are training for.

If you don't mind playing the KV-1 for a while, you could run 50 games with each gun and see which you prefer.
