Recently got a new base 2020 MacBook Air (and obviously it would not be ideal for playing WoT on) but before I put forth the effort of downloading it, could it run it?
Thanks

Ask W.o.T. and they can tell you.

Given the fact that Microsoft has not released DirectX for macOS and the game relies on it - you will not have a good experience unless you have an eGPU when running macOS natively. Codeweavers has done a great job but the Wine version is a little bit old [probably due to Wargaming not approving a new version of the wrapper] and I suspect the DirectX-Vulkan-Metal software compatibility layer is also not the latest as well.
You can run MS Windows natively [after installing via Boot Camp] and try under MS Windows but the Intel Iris Plus discrete graphics will probably only get you about 40/50 FPS on low settings.
Linux is able to take advantage of the latest Wine and there, IIRC, are reports that Linux runs WoT even faster than MS Windows on the same hardware. There are still some glitches but they seem to be related to the DirectX-Vulkan software compatibility layer as Microsoft has also not released DirectX for Linux.
IMHO you should not download WoT and run on macOS with a MacBook Air - if you install either Linux or MS Windows then yes you should probably give it a try ...
Hope this helps ...

Thanks for jogging my memory ...
OP if you are going to play on either MS Windows or macOS then I strongly recommend that you look at Macs Fan Control [runs natively on MS Windows and macOS] and set the fan controls manually. I have been running it for years with my various iterations of MacBook Pros and iMacs to great success ...
