This is a great video with a strong message about what is going on today.

Medal Of Honor Recipient Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez shares the true meaning of our flag. I filmed this in the early 1990's when Roy came to our unit in Cleveland, Ohio (Desert Storm was getting underway) to speak at the Soldier of the Year awards.

Karl Marx was a total azzhat who preached that total chaos is good in that it is necessary as a prelude to a change to communistic government that would own all property, companies, and minds of the people. His ideas have proven to be completely impractical, and all regimes founded on his principles have failed miserably worldwide due mainly to the total lack of personal motivation, a reason to work hard for one's self and family to have a better life. In a Marxist society, all people are poor except for the Party leaders. I'm glad to be a part of the great middle class of America. Literally hundreds of millions of Americans living well due to a free market (with a few necessary controls), capitalist economy & free elections of leaders.

Actually, the truth, as with most things in real life, is a tad bit more complicated than an either/or situation. If you have pure unfettered Capitalism, you get the rise of capitalist oligarchs and monopolies. If you have pure unfettered Marxism, you get the rise of dictators controlling the flow of resources. What is actually required to avoid these situations is a careful blend of capitalism and socialism. Governments should maintain tight regulations on product quality (to protect consumers), prevention of monopolies as well as build social nets such as unemployment insurance medicare and such. Private industry should be in charge of actually creating the wealth and distributing it through their employees. By doing it this way, you spread power over many groups/institutions/individuals and avoid the inevitable result of tyranny when one person or group controls all the resources. Blended systems are necessary because we are an imperfect species and if left to our own devices, somebody will always try to control everyone else unless there is somebody else to act as a check to that person.

"There is a special reason why you, the future leaders of the United States Army, need to be philosophically armed today. You are the target of a special attack by the Kantian-Hegelian-collectivist establishment that dominates our cultural institutions at present...The motive of the destroyers in not love for communism, but hatred for America.  Why hatred? Because America is the living refutation of a Kantian universe. Today's mawkish concern with compassion for the feeble, the flawed, the suffering, the guilty, is a cover for the profoundly Kantian hatred of the innocent, the strong, the able, the successful, the virtuous, the confident, the happy. A philosophy out to destroy man's mind is necessarily a philosophy of hatred for man, for man's life, and for every human value. Hatred of the good for being the good, is the hallmark of the twentieth century.  This is the enemy you are facing."

- Ayn Rand addressing the graduating class of West Point, March 6, 1974, from her book Philosophy: Who Needs It, c1984
